  • Whole House Water Filter

I think we need one. Seems like we are renting way longer than I envisioned, and our water is gross.

Plus my nanny keeps drinking all of my bottled water, and buying cases from Costco is killing me (thanks for the help DH! - never!!).

So either I get the big bottles delivered. Which is fine, except that my kids love those coolers and flood any place we go that has them. I don't have a great easily accessible place for it either (pantry has no plug, laundry room is fine, except it's also the mud room, and they will absolutely get in there to play with the cooler (we have a baby gate up now - the door doesn't work well for blocking them if I need to get in or out.

Anyway, we don't have a soap dispenser hole, so I can't do an under the sink filter.

So I guess my opinions are the countertop (which is not ideal, my kids will freak out that the aqua is up there and they can't play with it.), or the whole house. The filter in the fridge still seems to have yucky tasting water, so maybe a whole house filter would too?

My hair has also felt pretty icky since moving here (until last week when I started using apple cider vinegar when I wash it). Plus humidifiers are so annoying. I have to buy distilled water, because a filter lasts like a week.

Anyway - anyone have a whole house filter? Will it make water from the tap drinkable? (Most the new houses we have looked at have whole house filters and make this claim, but I don't know if it's true).

Apparently culligan will rent them on a monthly basis... but I don't know if their whole house filter does the same thing all these builders are claiming the ones they are installing will.

Any idea what I should be looking for?

    Whole House Water Filter

We have a massive 4 tank system out back, and an under the sink reverse osmosis system at the kitchen sink.
    I'll see what they are!

Edited: are you on city, or well? I would have your water tested if it's "funky", by an independent lab.

Thank you! Did you guys buy that house (I can't remember), or was all of that already there?

It's city. I think I tried sending in one of those water test kits - or maybe I asked DH to do it, and he claimed we couldn't because we weren't the owners. But I'll look for a different one.

I think I'm a little panicked because our old neighborhood is under a boil advisory and I feel like I've read so many facebook posts about it this week. Plus, I think everyone is getting sick again, so I'll have to deal with the annoying humidifiers... and I feel like my DH is going to have some crazy panic attack related to Dodd-Frank and he'll never agree to buy a house... so looks like a good time to settle in a little...

So it looks like there are tons of kits on Amazon that promise lab quality results... think that will work?

We don't have a whole house system. I'm not sure they are easily removed if you move. It may have to stay with the house. We have an under the sink RO system for drinking. We didn't have a hole for it either but a countertop co drilled it for $75. We own our house though. Guess I'm not too much help.

We haven't purchased the house yet, but it's in the works.
I found our independent lab through calling well drilling companies and asking around.

No that is helpful! I tried to get a guy to install one in our last house and he told me no - it would crack the countertops (they were 10yo granite that was fine, I wasn't in love... but I wasn't ready to deal with new countertops, so I just ignored it. And then we moved. Like always 😬 lol).

So maybe I can just have an under the sink RO system installed, and deal with my hair not loving the water later. (I don't even know if that's a soft vs hard thing or if it's a filter thing).

Culligan apparently rents whole house filters monthly and will take out when you leave - but I don't how simple it is. I'm sure they have a great scam attached too....

Yes. Call a countertop company! Ours counter top is corian and about 13 years old. These companies cut countertops for a living- granite, corian, etc. You can also rent an RO system from Culligan and a few other companies. I researched then bought a system. Hand the counter cut and had my plumber install it.

We have a whole house filter but we're on well water. After being pumped, water goes through softener, then filter, then every tap and toilet. I love the convenience. We have both filter and softener serviced every 8-9 months.
