  • Building a pool

    Anyone done this?

I am so overwhelmed. Which size what model. Salt or ozone. Add this feature$$$

Basically I get a giant hole for $$$ anything extra like a diving board, light cost more

Our pool was already here, but one thing I really like about it is the original owners had it built with an automatic pool cover that you can open/close with a keypad. We're upgrading the cover soon to one that can support more weight (a safety thing with the dog & kids) but that upgrade should be a lot cheaper for us because the tracks were already installed at the same time they built the pool (vs adding it later, which would be harder).

Are you getting a heater? Everyone I know with a pool heater always complains that it's broken (including me!). Seems like a waste if it's just going to break down anyway.

My parents put one in at their new house, and they have a heater and I believe it's a salt pool.
      I'll ask!

The cover also reduces evaporation, which in a hot climate will be considerable.

Is it a gas heater or heat pump?

We looked at doing the auto close, it was an additional 16K...

Not sure: they have geothermal heat, so that probably heats the pool.

Following this thread. The majority of the houses we are shopping for right now have pools. We had a pool in our residency house and hardly used it because it wasn't heated, so for me having it heated is an absolute must.

We r trying to decide between fiberglass or cement walls with liner. Each is about 50k Anyone know anything about the two?

With the liner, I know that it can pucker/pull and sag, causing leaks. Unclear as to if the fiberglass is better. Texting my parents now.

Avoid the liner if you can. We had one growing up and the liner would tear at least once every year. It was such a pain for my dad. Our dog didn't swim in the pool or anything, but any time he would get in his claws would tear it, too.

We have a gas heater, an automatic cover and a salt pool. It is very little maintenance.

My parents just built one with their house three years ago. It has a spa and attached gas firepit, but he firepit hasn't been hooked up yet. It also has a heater, but they never use it because the cost to use it is insane.

They finished it with some stuff called DiamondBrite which is supposed to be more durable than plain plaster. It's a cheaper alternative to Pebbletec. It's kind of cool because you can choose the color and make the water look a certain way.

I wouldn't do a liner. We have concrete without a liner. I've mentioned our heater issues on FB. I think automatic covers are great but you can't do them for free form. Beware of landscaping around the pool, it will all end up in the water.

When our heater worked, it was connected to the propane tank and burned 2 gallons an hour.

We're looking into all of this, too. It's going to be a several years long project for us.
