    PSA Test

    OK- I'm in a rather 'heated' discussion with a Medical Director where I am surveying this week-

    So, my question is, without refering to your spouses or to medical websites, can you please indicate what YOUR understanding of when a man should have a PSA (the prostate blood test) done.

    I said at age 40 if race or family history indicate.

    My dad was tested starting when he was 40 because of family history (his dad had colon cancer). He had a few elevated tests and the first doc he saw wanted to operate based on one elevated PSA. 8O So he went for a 2nd opinion and the following PSA levels were closer to normal. He gets tested now about every 6 months, depending on the levels, which vary from test to test. He also gets regular biopsies. I think its a good idea to start testing early, it is the most common type of cancer for men in many areas of the world and a blood test is pretty non-invasive.

      well without looking it up or asking DH I said :
      50 or earlier if family/race/personal health history indicate. It should be yearly from what I understand

        Well- can I just tell you how much I f-ing HATE doctors.

        Without going into details, let's just say that I was insulted, I was not directly spoken to, and I was told that because I'm not a MD, I cannot interpret studies. Oh, yeah, and when I quoted the same study back at them, I was told that I was making it up...

        (so happy that the THREE Master's Level Statistics courses have left me completely unable to interpret study results...) (oh, but wait, that's right, an MD supercedes all other possible professional education)

          Jenn! Sorry to hear about your run-in with those jerks. I have no idea how I would have handled that.

          Where on earth did they get the idea that only MDs use statistics?? I'm having trouble thinking of a field that DOESN'T.

              That sounds annoying. I hope after you wiped the drool off your face, grunted in the most Neanderthal fashion, hunched your back with your arms swaggering back and forth, you told them to stick their study up where the bright light doesn't shine.
