  • SOS Match Day Looming

I would be grateful for some helpful words to get me (and the rest of us MS4s) through the next 3 weeks. DH is no help as he knows he will be in the hospital doing what he loves anywhere we go. I however will be dealing with everything outside the hospital wherever we go. I feel like the pause button was hit a few weeks ago and the play button will not be pushed until Match Day.

Welcome back! I remember that "pause button" feeling well. I see in your sig that he's Matching into GS? I guess my Match Day take-away has always been to temper your expectations, but to go into it with a certain measure of optimism. Whether it leads to an expected path or an unexpected adventure, the Match is going to open up this next phase of your lives as a medical couple. It's exciting! (And yeah, scary. But you've got this!)

Howdy! I remember it was such an overwhelming feeling to wait and wait.

We had an unconventional way with dealing with it--I had a baby Feb 20 and was pretty much fully distracted til Match Day.

I did the same! Babies are a great distraction. 😆

Put us in the baby preceding match day camp too.

As for you...enjoy it! Go out to drinks, have dinner parties and just really enjoy the downtime before intern year begins!

Mine is taking an extra year, but almost all our friends are matching this year. Lately when we all get together we've been imagining what it's like to live in different cities and making plans for future trips. Specifically for match day, we're hosting them for mimosa brunch and then the other two supporting partners and I are planning post-match festivities with a few contingency plans. Hang in there! It sounds like a really weird combo of stress, exhilaration, and fun.

We got to witness match day and it was intense. Uro is an early match but we went down to the envelope event. People were crying and clapping and freaking out. Our best med school friends were shocked but their match (but ultimately happy) but the stunned look on both their faces was really jarring.

We prepared by having the aftermath open: there wasn’t a party we had to go to, we didn’t make crazy dinner plans. This was in our favor, as he didn’t match at #1 and we were quite shocked (he was gutted for a month).

Having said that, the program was right for us — we made amazing friends that we still visit annually, his co-resident delivered DS1, and we didn’t have to move. (Ya’ll know how much we like to move, too) 😂

In all seriousness, prepare for the best, but also give yourself an exit strategy. You may not feel like being celebratory, and that’s okay too!

Our experience was rather similar to Thirteens. He matched early and was so deflated by the result. Turned into a fabulous program and town. Residency turned into fellowship which turned into the job!!

Hang in there. I know it's scary but it's also damn exciting!

We had an early match, so we found out at home, but we were very surprised and disappointed. I'm so glad we didn't have to find put publicly. As with so many others, it has turned out to be an amazing fit in so many ways, though not perfect, and he's got a job for next year in our dream location, so there's light at the end of the tunnel.

We chose to stream the event and hang out in a private spot in a cafe we liked. We didn’t want to endure the spectacle and potential disappointment. We were happy with our match though later on (once residency began) realized that we were in a very hellish malignant program. Hang in there!

We went to a boozy brunch before the event and then dragged both kids to the envelope event. It was neat--they had a countdown and everyone was grouped by specialty. Everything was private, though, so it wasn't horrible pressure. He matched at #1 for rads and #3 for Prelim, so we were very happy. Although it didn't sink into me what the #3 prelim IM year meant. I was just happy to stay here, but he knew it was going to be really rough. After we hung out with med schools friends at a park with food trucks. It was really nice.

I am glad we didn’t have an event for fellowship match. As many of the ladies can tell you here it was a bit dramatic at my house. Dh was thrilled me not so much. We did have a graduation dinner that night and it was so hard to hold back tears as people congratulated him.
