  • Reviving a local residency Partner/Spouse/Family group

I'm feeling hopeful. We're now PGY-2. This past year has been lonely, and there wasn't much to do related to residency families. In an attempt to reinvigorate a local group for residency partners/spouses and families, I gathered up my courage and started a monthly drop-in. We hosted the first one last night and it was a success - about 7 families came and some signed up to host in future months. We're also going to plan quarterly activities - brewery, bowling, etc.

All this to say - if its not happening in your area - go ahead and try it yourself
Working mom of almost 5yo (Sept 2013) boy S and 2.5yo (Feb 2016) boy J and old lady fur baby. Husband is 2nd career PGY2 in Radiology. I'm on social media too much and really need to read and practice yoga more.

    That’s fantastic! Way to go!

I'm a huge advocate for blooming where were planted because the medical crapfest can take us to a lot of places we’d never willingly consider.

    Strong work!

How fun! We didn't have a super active group in our residency town, and I missed out on a lot of interactions.

We didn’t have anything in our residency location either. They did have a Christian group which I went to once but was turned off because 1) it was open to all doctoral spouses which made it way less useful because gettin a humanities PHD and a medical residency involve differing familial concerns and 2) (the much larger problem) was an attitude of “don’t ever complain to your husband about your day because his was MUCH harder.” Sure...right.

Well I am a Christian and I can assure you, that’s not a part of my theology...

That's great to hear! I tried to set up a local group too. The attending spouses were not interested but it helped to revive the former resident/fellowship spouse group. I was happy something good came of it!

Remind me: have you ever introduced yourself? I don’t think I remember seeing that thread.
