Has anyone else been listening? I'm only on episode 3, but I want someone to talk about it with and DH hasn't listened yet. Anyone??

Yes, DH and I have. I think DH finished it. I wanna say I stopped at episode 4 and haven't finished it yet. I also remember reading about the case when it happened here and am familiar with a lot of the hospitals.Married to a newly minted Pediatric Rad, momma to a sweet girl and a bunch of (mostly) cute boy monsters.

I've been avoiding reading any of the articles until I finish the podcast series. But, I have a question for you: Do you know if he's board certified? I don't know how board certification works in neurosurgery, but in ortho you have to keep track of all of your surgical cases for 6 months, then defend all of your decisions in front of a panel of surgeons. DH had to be board certified within a certain time period in order to operate at the hospitals he operates at, so I'm wondering how this guy could have gotten around that issue??

I don't recall it being mentioned in the podcasts I listened to so far. DH doesn't either. Something I found online says he wasn't, but I don't know if that is true or not. Maybe because he bounced from hospital to hospital so often. I have no idea how NSG boards work either. SuzySunshine? Oooh, sounds interesting, I'll go check it out.
For something decidedly more lowbrow, has anyone listened to "My Dad Wrote A Porno"? It is definitely NSFW or out loud EVER but I have never laughed so hard by myself listening to a podcast. I routinely cry because I'm laughing so hard. I can't run to the podcast because I almost fell over one time.Married to a Urology Attending! (that is an understated exclamation point)
Mama to C (Jan 2012), D (Nov 2013), and R (April 2016). Consulting and homeschooling are my day jobs.

When you graduate a NSG residency you are board eligible, you take the written boards during residency, usually pgy5 and can’t graduate unless you pass. Then after you’ve been in practice for a year you start tracking your cases, once a case has cleared a 90 day follow up you can count it. Then you submit your cases to a board which reviews your cases and invites you to sit for orals. All of this has to be done within 5 years of finishing residency or you have to take the written boards again. Fellowship doesn’t give you a pass so if yo graduate in ‘18 but do a fellowship to ‘19 your 5 years is still up in ‘23. What is this Dr Death that you speak of?Wife to NSG out of training, mom to 2, 10 & 8, and a beagle with wings.

Thanks SuzySunshine! That’s really similar to how board certification works for ortho, too.
Dr. Death is a podcast series about a neurosurgeon in Dallas (Dr. Christopher Duntsch) who killed/maimed more than 30 patients. I didn’t think I’d be that into it, but now I’m hooked.

I think he was not board certified. I also think they recently made changes to the way they do questions at neurosurgery boards - like last 2-3 years. Before, I think you submitted your cases and then they asked you questions about only unrelated cases. And now they ask you about your cases that were submitted. Interesting- because it would help - perhaps- in situations like this one (which is just so horrifying and I really hope I never need another surgery... 😱.
