The only thing that annoyed me about the podcast was it was clear the journalist didn't quite fully "get" how medical training works. She kept blurring med school and residency/fellowship together in a way that made it clear she was a little lost there. Maybe because he did it all in one place? I figured the story of how he even matched into NSG would be interesting, but she never covered it. (unless it was in one of the later episodes?)

Yeah that annoyed me too. Especially bc she’s a medical journalist and it’s just not that complicated.

I also don’t get how his residency program was so negligent with his level of training and then passing him through residency and fellowship. Have they been sued?

She touched on this briefly in the second follow up episode (8, I think), and she mentioned there would be more episodes coming with additional information. Someone from his residency program contacted her once the podcast aired and said Dr. Duntsch was rarely around in residency. So where was he, and what was going on there??

I thought the part between Dr. Henderson and the fellowship mentor Dr. Foley (about the recommendation to get hospital privileges) was ... unusual. There must be more to the story there...

Yes they have changed boards. The cases submitted were submitted to make sure you had a good variety, now they ask you about your specific cases. It changed right after DH took his in 2016.

On the WCI forum someone said he knew Dr. Duntsch in residency, and that he seemed like a nice/normal resident, but something happened in his personal life during training that started his downward spiral. I wonder what it was? Drugs/alcohol?? Even if that's true, it's weird that his fellowship mentor didn't notice any problems during fellowship.

You have to submit case logs to graduate from urology residency, is that not the norm in NSG? Or did he falsify them?

Yes you do to show that you have a range of experience. DH’s residency tracked his for him, he just had to verify them.

I’m baffled that there isn’t more scrutiny regarding his training. It seems like the victims could make a case against all the folks responsible for passing this guy along. There has to be way more to know. The fellow resident saying, “he rarely saw him” raises huge red flags to me. If I had to guess he convinced them he wasn’t ever going to practice and he was just going to build his research business. I’d also want to know how many investors came from in and around his training location. For some reason the guy was allowed to complete residency. For me, that’s the biggest crime and the largest failure in this entire story. The investigative reporter has only touched about 10% of this case. I call huge BS on this guy earning an MD/PhD. Who was his PhD advisor? Who sat on his committee? Were any of them investors? The podcast, while gripping, is weak with backstory.

Oh I totally agree with Pollyanna. If I were a victim, I’d be looking into suing UT for certifying an unsafe surgeon who didn’t complete the requisite required training and then continuing to recommend him even when they were major questions raised about his experience.

For something decidedly more lowbrow, has anyone listened to "My Dad Wrote A Porno"? It is definitely NSFW or out loud EVER but I have never laughed so hard by myself listening to a podcast. I routinely cry because I'm laughing so hard. I can't run to the podcast because I almost fell over one time.

I’m only on episode 4 but holy crap!! I’d totally be suing UT for his training and I’d be going after Baylor for not going through the steps to get him out of the OR.

Talking to DH about this, his hospitals have a number of protocols in place that would have stopped this situation right in its tracks. For example, surgeons have to operate with a proctor (more established surgeon) for X number of cases after they’ve been given operating privileges. So many balls were dropped along the way here, I think that’s what makes the case so, so egregious.

DH did over 1,600 cases in residency! This podcast says they can only prove he was in 100!! 100!! I just am amazed that he graduated from what is a decent program. 😳

Exactly. I still believe he had faculty that were investors in his business. There has to be a reason they passed him along and why Foley continued to give him recommendations of sorts. I wonder if any governing body has even investigated UT? The PhD doesn’t even make sense or follow the regular path.
