    Kids & Splinters

    Anyone have any advice on how to get splinters out of a very uncooperative kids hands?

    My son grabbed this gross old price of wood next to the parking lot at school yesterday and ended up with about 12-14 splinters. He won’t let me anywhere them. I even suggested just using tape, because he is so upset by the tweezers (which didn’t even get anywhere near him) I can’t try the tape because he “isn’t paper, and it could hurt” him. 🙄

    I’m kid of out of ideas. He wouldn’t let DH beat him either. Can I just leave them there? No, right?

    Anyway, was just wondering if anyone had ideas for me.....

    Try soaking his hand in Epsom Salts. I have not done it myself, but I've read that Epsom Salts work well for splinters.

      Yep, I was going to recommend Epsom salts too. A long warm soak can help push the splinters out of the skin. Then I would recommend a team approach involving making his hands invisible behind a barrier of some kind while he is thoroughly distracted by another adult, and you grab the easiest ones with tweezers. Between a warm water soak and maybe some cold sprays of Bactine(you can put it in the fridge), you might be able to confuse his senses enough to pull some out before he notices. Having him hold an ice pack before you try might help too. But mostly the distraction. Loud cartoons and treats whole your do your best behind a drape? ��

      The last time I tried to pull a splinter it was a fiasco. Hell, last night I tried to put Carmex on a cracked lip and I had to convince her to close her eyes (while she screamed "but it's gonna tingle!"). So I'm used to the three ring circus.

        Yeah - this one is just so much more argumentative than his brother - who has willing let us get splinters out before. I will admit that once I was perhaps too aggressive with a cactus needle in the difficult kids hand and then it weirdly came out on its own... so I think he thinks that’s what will happen again.

        But the numbing thing is a great suggestion! No idea why I never thought of that (my parents could have also used the tip!).

        I’ll try the salt soak too! I would really love to try while he’s asleep, but I need light (which usually wakes him). DH has a hiking head lamp somewhere. Maybe I’ll try that at the end of nap time tomorrow if all else fails.

        Wish me luck! (I already injured myself yesterday trying to fight with him, so if the salt soak doesn’t work.... I’m hoping DH takes over the assignment.).

          Ugh...I remember my dad digging splinters out of me! It was terrible! I'd much rather get my own.

            I actually paid for a peds visit to get a splinter out of a toe, after we both got kicked in the face.

              Elmer's Glue, let it dry and then "maybe" when you pull it off it will pull the splinters with it.
