Anybody take a trip with the extended family where you thought it was the perfect location for such an ambitious retreat?

I am open to anywhere right now, as long as it is family friendly, has some out door stuff to do, and isn't 5 star as far as lodging prices goes.

Keep in mind that for the people in my husband's family who have kids, all of them will be under the age of four and one won't be a year old yet which I realize makes things a bit more complicated. We've decided that the theme parks (Disney, Universal) are out until the kids get older as a result.

Any thoughts you might have would be appreciated and we would have a summer gathering.....

I am not sure where you live or what part of country your family wants to meet up. If you are looking for warm weather. Maybe you could rent a cottage or lakehouse somewhere. We rented a beach house in SC for this month. Other friends of ours with small children did this and really enjoyed it. If you stay in a resort community, there is usually a pool, kids activities, recreation like golf and watersports. We are staying near Charleston which has lovely places to shop and explore. Some of these houses are huge and can sleep upto 12 to 14. It also depends on how close to your family you want to be. Friends of ours stayed with their siblings family and their parents. Each had their own floor of the house.

    Just a thought.

My family has always done the beach thing- every other year since 1973 (with a few years off). We would go to Sandbridge Beach, VA and Corolla, NC. Bethany Beach, Delaware is also nice.

I think the biggest we ever got required the rental of 5 houses that housed at least 8 people each. Most recently it was in Corolla and our house held 11 of us. It's hard to coordinate sometimes because different parts of the country are in schools at different times of the summer (i.e. we always went back after Labor Day, but my cousins started in August)
Usually we ended up going the first week of August.

How spread out is everyone? How about something close to home like San Juan islands or OR coast?
Ski towns are nice in the summer, too. Vail or Breckenridge in Colorado would be good choices with outdoor stuff, lots of shopping and restaurants, and laid-back atmosphere.
