  • New and don't know what I am doing???

    Hello everyone! Looking forward to getting to know all of you.

    Is there a place on this site that let's you know the abbreviations used in the posts and what they stand for. I am getting lost reading some of the posts b/c I don't know what the abbrev. stand for.

    Thank you.

    No, I don't think there is. What are some of the abbreviations? I'm sure people will repsond and explain.

      Welcome!!!

      Here are some I had to get used to:

      SAHM = Stay at home mom
      DH = Doctor husband
      PGY = Post graduate year

      Then there are the medical specialities....when I say CT I am refurring to cardio-thoracic.

      So what's your story?

        Flynn,

        Thanks for the input. The only abbrev. I didn't know was SAHM, the others I got, thank you for the input.

        My story, Well, my husband and I met at the end of his 1st year of med school. We got married right before graduation and now 7 years later, here we are! My husband is doing a one year colo-rectal fellowship and then we can begin our life.

        We have a 21 month old daughter and she is just adorable. It took us 4 years to have her so we feel blessed to be parents. We experienced a lot of infertility and I had a lot of miscarriages before having her.

        I am a SAHM. I used to work in the corporate world in accounting and finance. I hope to pick my career up when our daughter goes to school in a few years. I may go to law school when she is in school full-time. That was a dream I had that was not possible due to my husband's career. He is supportive of whatever I want to do. When he is an attending, hopefully we will be in a better situation financially, right now, we are just getting by, especially with me being home.

        That is it in a nutshell. How about you?

        Pam

          Welcome Pam...I'm old and I don't know what I'm doing!

          Here are a few more:

          BTW = By the way
          IMHO = In my humble opinion
          DD = Darling Daughter
          DS = Darling Son
          MIL = Mother in law
          FIL = Father in law

          Congrats on making it so far. For what it is worth, I wouldn't do law school if I had to do it over again. The expectations of the profession and the actual practice are two entirely different things. Additionally, it is difficult to manage two high powered careers, especially when one-half of the couple is a surgeon. With this being said, if this is your dream, go for it and don't let the cynical observations of a grump like me stand in your way.

            To answer the previous question:

            I met my DH as a guy who just started his M2 year. I was sick of the midwest (sorry it's just not my cup of tea), moved back to Seattle after we knew each other for a year, kept in touch, and he matched in G. Surgery as an intern in Seattle. We married at the very beginning of his R2 year and have been married 6 years this month. Since he did lab time, GS was a 7 year residency. I was a high school teacher, quit when my daughter was born and have never looked back other than to say I really enjoyed teaching!

            DH just finished up his General Surgery time and started CT this July. We look forward to LESS (omigosh that felt good to write!) than two years remaining in this hellish limbo called "training."

            That's the short version but it will do for now.
            Welcome again and it's nice to have another GS wife on the boards!

              Thanks

              Kelly and Flynn,

              Thanks for the input. It is so nice to have other spouses to talk to who completely understand what it is like going through residency etc. I am glad to not feel alone. I have so many wonderful friends and I have a wonderful family, but none of them really understand what life is like as a resident's wife and what a medical career really entails. (although they all think they do and b/c they are all professionals themselves, they don't think that residency is any harder than what they have to do. LOL)

              I appreciate the input about Law School. I am still trying to decide what I really want to do when our daughter goes to school full-time. Law school was a dream I gave up that I wished I hadn't. Like I said earlier, I'm an accountant and even though I have been successful at it... I hate it. I am not at all the typical accountant personality and many people have told me I should be a pharm. rep, or a PR person for a large corp. My heart is just not in accounting. I have tossed around so many ideas that I have no idea what I will end up doing. For now, I am enjoying every moment of being a SAHM. It took us 4 years to have a successful pregnancy and have our daughter, so I feel so fortunate to be able to stay home with her.

              Okay, I am rambling on. Have a great week!

              Pam
