  • match question

I've been trying to do a little research so I'm pretty sure I know the answer to the question I'm about to ask - it's just not the answer I was hoping for so I figured I should ask those more in the know than myself.

It seems like when I've read all of these articles referring to the preference given to placing married students together that the matching only refers to 4th year student couples looking to match in the same area, not couples who include only one medical student. Is that right? I was hoping that some preference would be given to those student's whose spouses need to live in a certain area to maintain their careers but it seems I was mistaken all along. Any comments?

    Sadly, you are correct.
The couples match is for students who are applying to residencies at the same time. That's not a guarantee, though, as we know of several couples who did not match in the same cities.

      Yep you're right.

Out of the couples we know, one stayed in the med. school city after the R1 matched, and one transfered to a different med. school. Neither was ideal and incidentally, the med. student who stayed behind for two years -- well they are now divorced.

It sounds like your DH is including some programs in his rank list that are located in areas you'd rather not live in. The best way to control where you move is to only rank programs in cities/areas you'd like to live in.

Thank you for all of the input. My boyfriend is hoping to match at his local hospital because they have a good program for PM & R. I would love it if he matched here because I could keep my job (which I love) and also just because I know people and am familliar with the area. We'll just have to see what happens. Moving to another city could be a great thing and I'll be sure to give my 2 cents about where he ranks things.
