  • D-Day

We got the confirmation letter yesterday. DH is coming out of the lab to return to clinicals June 16th. (Fourth year of the residency, but PGY6). This is certainly bittersweet news. His lab years have been fantastic for us, but we are ready to move along out of residency. I guess this makes us short-timers now that we only have 2.5 years left in Minnesota. The last 4.5 have blown by.

Wow! You are past the halfway point. I'm sure the benefits of the lab years will be missed but forward progress helps sweeten it.

(btw, I am still astounding that the dept has total control over whether he did another research year! )

.....and then you will move to Indianapolis for Sean's fellowship and we will become best buds!

Philadelphia or Princeton would be a much better place for him.

Like so many other aspects of medicine, where we go for fellowship is not our choice. In the entire country, there will only be 21 openings for pediatric surgery fellowships. DH will interview at every single program that he gets an interview and list every place in the match. The interviews begin next fall. As you all know those expenses will all come out of our personal pocket. Good thing we have all those secret Swiss bank accounts. All that money will come in handy if we have to move our family of four to some place like NYC and live on a fellow's salary.

Consider free room and board for an interview if you are in our area. Philadelphia to New York we have you covered.

Same here, Kelly! I don't know if OHSU has a peds surg program, but if they do, Sean is more than welcome to partake of the lap of luxury that is the air matress in the baby's room. (Seriously, he is more than welcome and the air mattress is rumored to be quite comfy).

I can hook you up in DC, should you end up there. (of course it will be at the local Marriott, but I can at least get you the "Friends and Family" rate...)

You guys rock. But wherever I end up, whoever I'm near, I get to be "Marcia" and YOU have to be "Jan".

Ditto on the offer of a place to stay if he gets an interview in Indy.

                          Kelly,
Sucks that he has to leave the lab, but at least you can see a bit of a glimmer at the end of the tunnel.
I don't know if any programs are around here, but you guys are more than welcome to crash here too! Even if you aren't close enough to stay, let me know if you're in the Upstate area and I'll drive in to meet you. 8)

I suppose the quicker you guys move on to the next phase, the quicker training will be done, but it does suck to hear that your lab days are over! Maybe you guys can "bank" some couple/family time in the next few months.

You guys can stay here only if you promise not to report me for being an unfit, stressed out mom Best of luck during the upcoming "journey".
