Hello everyone. It's been a few years since I've been on here. I just need some advice out there if anyone is married to a psychiatrist or psychiatry resident (which is what my husband is). I'm 3 months pregnant, which probably doesn't help my mood. I have been feeling generally unhappy lately, just sort of down in the dumps and rather irritable. I'm not always like this, so I"m attributing most of it to being pregnant, but I just feel like when I have these mood swings I am constantly being analyzed by him or there is a constant stream of psycho babble coming my way or just treated as if I'm a patient of his. It's very frustrating. I also sense a feeling if distance from him lately. I can imagine that has a lot to do with my mood but him being distant makes me feel worse. I've told him most of this, but it doesn't seem to change things. He has been working a ton but in his free time spending a great deal of time with coworkers instead of at home. Does anyone have any advice? Is it just because I'm pregnant and it's all me or has anyone experienced this with their husband as psychiatrist at home? Thanks!

Pregnancy & Psychiatrist Husband

Hi,
I can totally identify with you, though my dh doesn't analyze me thank goodness! We went through a wierd phase (or are going through to be more accurate) in the last several months. It all boiled down to me feeling depressed (PPD), him basically staying away because he didn't know what to do (he doesn't admit this), me feeling more depressed and angry at him for not being there for me, him staying away more etc. etc. A vicious cycle that we seem to be getting out of. My dh insisted everything was fine for months, but once I finally got through to him that things were not in fact fine, he sort of "reappeared" and things are getting better.
Congrats on the pregnancy and I hope things get better for you soon! This is a good place to come for support!!!Awake is the new sleep!

My decidedly non-psychiatric husband occasionaly starts "analyzing" me, too. I think it may have less to do with the particular medical specialty and more to do with a personality trait.
I am generally irritable and unhappy during the first trimester of pregnancy, too. It's my absolute least favorite time of pregnancy to be exact.
Sorry, I don't have any advice right now - but I can commiserate.

psych
My hubby is in PGY1.
I don't know if his opinions are just the way they are because they are that way or if it's because he's in psych.
I've never been pregnant before so I can't offer some advice on that one other than to keep the communication open and don't stop trying to talk about it.
