I work in a nursing home as a social worker. Today I was comforting a 93 year old man named Howard whose wife is in the end stages of Alzheimer's. He was reminicsing about the good times that he and his wife had spent together. Although they were very wealthy, not once did this man mention a fancy car, a beautiful mansion or an elaborate vacation. The memories that he recalled were of his wife's raisin bread, his young son chewing on the dog's bone and going for long walks in the park as a family. My point is, I see a lot of people at the end of life and the times that they spent with their family is what they value the most. I know how financially devistating the med school experience can be. It too shall pass and in the end you'll see that all those things that you couldn't afford, really don't matter. Make the most of the precious moments that your med spouse has off and make memories that you'll talk about when you're 93! Thank you Howard for a valuable life lesson.
