  • Boycott WalMart

I'm calling on you all to boycot walmart and SAMS club with me.

On a long stretch of highway (none of which has been developed yet) near us, there was a small forest ... It was only a couple of acres but it has been kept intact despite the fact that the other land has been cleared for the construction of strip malls and cement parking lots. It hasn't been cleared because a family of EAGLES has a nest there and has been reproducing for the last few years!!!

One Sunday morning though, trucks rolled in and CLEAR CUT the entire property in a matter of hours....They did it because a petition had been put forward to make this small stretch of land a conservation area because it was home to the eagles.

Our town has been outraged that this was done right before this surely would have happened.

Guess why it was done? WalMart wants to build a Superstore and a SAMS Club right there...they have to be on that corner lot...they couldn't be right next to it..... We do not have a lack of land..none of the lots have been developed in that industrial area. They knew that they would lose if it came to court so they cleared it on the sly. It is disgusting.

An injured baby eagle was found nearby, but the health status of the other eagles is unknown.

Were these bald eagles? (ie aren't those federally protected birds?)

There is a town in Maryland that passed zoning requirements that would prevent big-box stores from building- so Wal-mart decided to build two smaller stores...right next to each other- which of course would then meet the zoning requirements. And they have the gall to say that they're meeting the standards that the community had set forth.

I'm so sorry for the clear cutting. That really sucks.

I already boycott them because of their treatment of female and minority employees AND of course the birth control/Viagra thing.

      Hate 'em.

I think there was talk of removing bald eagles from the endangered list, I may be wrong tho.

How disgusting. It pisses me off just to read about it.

I'm in. I won't spend my money in either.

I've been conflicted about both Wal-Mart and Sam's Club. On the one hand, I love their low prices; but on the other, I'm sad to see their impact on communities and small businesses. I think this has now pushed me over to the 'dislike' side, though. They are also trying to build a Wal-Mart in our community and, so far, a group of citizens has successfully blocked their efforts.

I won't be giving them any of my money anymore.

Yay! Boycott Walmart! Now I have another reason to convince everyone I know not to shop there! If saving a couple bucks on groceries is more important than Mom & Pop buisnesses and natural habitat for wildlife, we are in trouble! It's sad about the birds, endangered or not, they shouldn't have their house cut down.

Yes, down with Walmart! not only have they taken over open and badly needed natural spaces, they've taken our choices away as they monopolize every market out there.... they are the biggest chain store alive and they put all the mom n pop stores out of biz. not to mention they scar every neighborhood and landscape that they plop themselves onto with their huge box of generic whatevers!

despite all of that they just settled the biggest law suit against a chain store in history---billions of dollars they settled to quiet down the fact that they employed hundreds of immigrant workers, paid them next to nothing and locked them in the stores at night to clean! illegal or not, humans are humans and not slaves or dogs!

                  definitely boycott!

This time I really, really, really will stick to my guns and boycott Walmart. I can't abide by their labor and business practices. I will spend the extra money to go elsewhere. I keep sliding back on this promise to myself, but I no longer can feed the massive giant.

I am proud to say that I haven't stepped foot in a Walmart in about 8 years. Target is one of my favorite places to shop.
I am vehemently jumping aboard the boycott and plan to tell everyone I know precisely why they should shop elsewhere!

Done. I hate the place. Any other subsidiaries we should know about? I hate it that you can be supporting something really evil disguised under a different name.

That's all I needed to hear! I prefer Target anyway, but after reading Nickled and Dimed, I'm pretty sure I haven't set foot in Wal-Mart ever since.

You mean those stores are owned by the same parent company, right? (And not owned by Wal-Mart).
