I agree with the inside doggie during the day thing. We used to leave Petey outside when we lived in Texas but- I came home at lunch and we had huge shade trees and a porch for him to hang out under. The crates were a disaster for him (herding dog) but he was fine outside. He NEVER barks except for the mailman and people at the front door.

Here in DC we don't have a yard so he's inside all day. I'm home now, but when I travelled he would be inside 9 hours minimum. He did fine. When he occasionally had an accident he went to the basement to relieve himself! He needs a ton of exercise so Rick would take him for VERY long walks at the end of the day. When he had to work overnight and I was gone we sent him to the doggie daycare place- which he actually loves.

He does better having a yard to run around in, but as long as he's getting three or four walks a day, he's ok. (lesson learned- don't get a herding dog if you live in a house with no yard!)
