    Gift suggestions for MS3 Hubby?

    My husband's birthday is coming up and I want to surprise him with a gift he's not expecting. He just started his 3rd year of med school, and already has a good stethescope, odescope, sphygmomenometor, etc. (sorry about the spelling).

    Any suggestions?

    Does he wear the Dansko clogs all the surgery people get? My DH hasn't stopped wearing those since intern year. In some places, a PDA is very handy - particularly if housestaff manuals have been made to go on them. (At JHU everyone had one instead of ref books.)

      I was going to say the same! Either a PDA or some software for it. The Dansko clogs are a great idea, too. The Walking Store offers a discount (or used to) for health professionals. And there is an outlet on the Dansko website.

        My wife just started her third year and has enjoyed the book "First Aid for the Wards". From what I gather, it contains tips for entering the hospital for the first time, has specific pointers by rotation and includes (I believe) tips on preparing for the shelf exams that accompany each rotation.

        I agree with others about how much a PDA is used but in our experience the med school has had very specific requirements and recommendations for the PDA itself. So, if his school is like my wife's, it might be tough for you to know if what you're getting will be acceptable (without spoiling the suprise at least).

          Ok I'm (mostly) kidding here but what is your DH going into?

          If it is a "nice" speciality (NOT transplant, neurosurgery, general surgery etc.) get him something nice to "enhance" his career. The book suggestion is a good one.

          If he's going into something HELLISH -- make him get you a gift. You deserve it!

            I second First Aid for the Wards--my husband read that a lot through third year.

            I think that third year is the hardest--so feel free to post when you get frustrated--I did! But even something non-medical related would be good, especially when doing the tough rotations...I think a gift certificate for a massage would have been good during the surgery rotation--that was a lot of standing!
