We have one mounted antique surgical instrument. It was a gift from his program to the graduate - - from one of their founder's personal collection. (Egad) We checked into purchasing some civil war kit instruments as a gift for a co-worker. Turns out they are quite collectible and very pricey. If you ever stumble over some inexpensive pieces in a shop, they are probably a good investment.

The best "medical" gifts I ever got the hubby were Dansko clogs when we couldn't afford them and an iPOD for the OR this year. I uploaded my entire music library for him as well and got him a subscription to audible for audio books/programs on his commute. He's still holding out for a convertible sports car, though..... Can't really call that medical, can you?

      Angie -

On the collectable OB/GYN antique front, tell your DH to check out the lecture room at University Hospital. There is stuff in there that is downright frightening. I was in that room 9 months pregnant for a breastfeeding class and almost changed my mind about having the baby. That's a really bad place to display such things.

I get pretty creeped out when I think about the movie Dead Ringers! I wonder if I could handle the display....

I've gotten dh surgical scrub caps that have sports teams on them. Also, I got him a sign that hangs in the garage that says: Surgeon Parking Only, All Others Will Bleed.

And, even though my dh is not a gyno, I really think I need to get him a bobblehead, singing about bacterial vaginosis.

I guess I have to go with the scrub caps. My DH wants very expensive books that go with his specialty so we either wait for Christmas money or he borrows them for now.

I have made him a scrub cap with his med school alma mater logo and now he wants one for his undergrad. The hardest part is finding the material. For his med school one I bought a T-shirt and cut it up, I'll probably do the same for his undergrad.

Check out ebay! It's a great resource for scrub caps, already made and cheap!

I have purchased from this lady before:

              Good luck!

I haven't gotten DH anything doctor related aside from a tie with stethoscopes. But I like the idea of specialty related scrub caps.

There isn't much one can give an anesthesiologist, and I would prefer to stay clear of this list offered by the ASA

                  1. "Who was First? Long, Morton, or Wells" (you choose which old decrepit guy should be on the T-shirt).

                  2. There are a variety of Memorable Biographies, History of Anesthesiology, and Scientific Classics

We tend to go the non-traditional route- For surviving residency Matt received a Dell Axim. He is loving it--- has some formularies on it, PDR, amongst other things he likes to have with him in the OR.
