As an ophthalmologist, my dh sees quite a few shaken babies. It's awful!! I've asked my dh not to tell me anymore when he's had to examine a shaken baby because it causes me such anguish. But, the truth is that the majority of babies are shaken by either dad or mom's boyfriend.Wife of Ophthalmologist and Mom to my daughter and two boys.

I don't think that rasing your own child is the answer to prevent such things. How many biological parents abuse their children every day??
Yes - sometimes it's harder to understand the motivation of people who have the means to hire a nanny yet continue to work outside the home if you've personally made the choice to be home. But does that mean if this kind of thing happens to someone who has to work for financial reasons, then they don't shoulder part of the responsibility, but people who've made the choice to continue their careers do?
I honestly think that parents need to be as thorough as possible during the nanny search, ask creative questions, do their research, and if possible - get their help from mutual contacts.
I've made the choice to stay home, and sometimes I question if I have the patience requried to do it. It's hard - a whole lot harder than I ever thought. I truly think that biology doesn't always determine the best caregiver for kids.

judgements aside, I am just saying it makes me mad that the only advice was how to ask even better questions to the nanny. The media and the "day care culture" never ever suggest that raising them yourself is an option.
to each his own, and yes....every day I ask if I can do it again tomorrow.

Peter - I actually agree with you on this point. No matter how bad things get with my attitude, etc for being around my kids 24/7, and how much I whine about needing a 'break', I whole heartedly believe that NO ONE would love them and care for them in the same way that I do. Other people may have more patience with them at times than I do (I find myself coming to the 'end of my rope' more times than I care to admit openly... ) , but in the end, I know that NO ONE else would do for them what I can do as their flesh and blood.
Okay, I'll slip back into my little cave now... :!
