  • All you med student spouses out there.....

We are publishing the next issue of MDFamily tomorrow and I am trying to decide what to go with in the medical school section. It's between 2005 NRMP Match interesting statistics and tips about the interviewing process. What do you think would be more useful at this stage of the game? It's a looooong stretch till Match Day isn't it? What a weird phase of training. Hurry up and wait......

I vote for interviewing process tips this time, and match statistics next time.

It feels both far away and very very close. Like a fast-moving train--I can see that it's still far away, but I know it's going to be right up on us in a blink.

It is a good time to be doing rotations (if possible) in locations which you may be considering. DH found this incredibly helpful in our decision-making. Experiencing a hospital and a town for a month is quite different from just popping in.

You're right. I don't know how much lead time you need to arrange that, but from everything I've read working at the program you're targeting increases your chances. Even if it didn't, getting to know the areas will make the transitions easier. For us, Match Day went something like "Baltimore! Huh? Wasn't expecting that! What's that like?" Even though it was a great program and high up on the list, we hadn't really thought about the "life" part of the equation - just the educational component. Residency is long. The "life" part needs to be considered, too.

I agree with Julie - we're in the middle of trying to schedule interviews and some tips would be appreciated!

Well, I went with the shorts on interviewing (sample questions, scheduling interview dates - does it matter when? - and interviewing travel tips) and a NRMP Match dates calendar. I will do the interesting statistics from last year's Match next issue (Nov/Dec) and then something on making rank lists and how the match works in Jan/Feb. Then in March hopefully we'll get some interesting match stories.....

The issue is all but done. We are dealing with a technical glitch, but it should be available tonight or tomorrow. I'll post an announcement with a table of contents when it's online.
