  • family friendly programs

I'm trying to put together a list of features that make a program more family friendly. Does anyone have any ideas?

I think "consistency" - as in the program doesn't have a large staff turn over and requirements and rotations stay stable from year to year.

I also think the presence of spouse support groups is a great feature. I've never been to a program that had an active group. I always get so jealous when I hear others talk about there groups!

Decent family health insurance, life insurance - benefits in general.

Area Cost of Living (although that isn't in the program's control)

    Any other ideas?

My hope is to make up a checklist for rating programs ala Consumer Reports or US News and World Report.

Well, since this can't be applied to all areas/specialties I'm not sure how applicable it would be, but the ability to take home call has been absolutely awesome for us. Again though, since not everyone can do it I don't know how relevant it would be.

ummm - call schedule year by year? I assume (hope) that the days of Q2 in trauma service are gone due to the new rule-following requirements ... yeah, right.

also, availablilty of moonlighting in-house? extra $ sure is family friendly.

        BWAHHAHAHAHAHA!

        Those exist? Really? Truthfully?

I was told that the program here was "family friendly" before we ranked it and showed up. Could have fooled me.

On the other hand, if it is family friendly, what are those programs like that aren't?

Is there any family friendliness to be had in surgery, or is the surgery residency exclusionary?

I really must second the spouse group.

Other than that I think job support for spouses would be good. Ours supposedly had that but I never benefited from it, so I'm not sure.

I think whether or not families come up in interviews is a tell tale sign as well.

            Very good suggestions so far.

            I would add:

            - Complies with the 80 hour workweek

            - Program Director recognizes that married residents' well-being begins at home

            - Offers flexibility with arranging paternity/maternity leave

            - Program boasts a LOW divorce rate among married residents
