Christmas gifts for residents and fellow families

I think I'm going to go with the nice restaurant gift certificates for the fellows on rotation - and maybe store gift cards for the residents on service. I'd invite them over, but I know few residents and families want to socialize any more than necessary with hospital people.

Frankly, I'm surprised nobody has ever received a gift. DH's programs were always horribly inconsiderate about hours, etc...but they always came through with some type of "appreciation".

I think the nice restaurant gift cert is a good idea. I would also appreciate a spa gift cert- massages for the guys, whatever for the girls. A wine of the month club ( or every other month depending on the $), a gift basket with nice wine, cheese and olives, or amazon.com ( could cover medical books or pleasure books), potterybarn.com etc gift certs. I am not a fan of dept gift certs- i got one from Dillards two years ago and cant find anything to buy in there but that is just me. Good luck and sorry for all the whinging.

Hallelujah...a very pleasant surprise and a nice opportunity to say I was wrong (better than some of the others I get!).

The most senior attending in DH's program brought a present for each resident with a card, personally signed. And brought the presents in before the residents came in. Wow! Very sweet, I think it meant more to the residents than he probably realizes.

My husband's department gave him $100 towards purchases at the school's bookstore! I'm not sure if it's just the interns (like him) or all residents. Now there are really no excuses for NOT studying!

                Yeah. What she said.

No presents here, ever. We did get a couple of cards from "favorite" attendings. What an amazing concept!

Ahhhh, my husband's program's "gift" to its residents this year?

Less time off for the holidays.

Traditionally half the program (the Christian half) gets the week of Christmas off and the other half (the mostly Jewish and "other" half) gets the week of New Year's off. But, this year the powers that be decided to do something different and only give each "half" four days off rather than an entire work week. Yay.

Around here even 4 days would be considered generous. As the other half, DH only gets 24th (Saturday) off. We have to request New Year as vacation in order for him to be off.

As for presents, this year the residents gave up on the attending noticing them and decided to do Secret Santa. Which means I have to buy a gift for a woman I know nothing about (DH doesn't even know her), aside from the fact that she's a resident at his hospital.

That really stinks. Reminds me of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation when the boss' wife finds out her husband cancelled the Christmas bonus -- "Frank, of all the cheap ways to save a buck." then the police officer "Mister, I ought to beat you with a rubber hose." Or something to that effect.
