Since many of you have moved around a lot, how do you determine if you'll like a particular location prior to moving? Does visiting for a day or two do the trick?
Well I don't feel like we really had a choice with med school or residency but my answer to that question would be no. My DH and I have already decided that when it comes time to interview for a "permanent" location I will go on all interviews and then if I need to I will go back without him to really look at the schools, neighborhoods, houses, etc. before we make a decision. We spent 7 days here when we bought our house which was too long because we already knew we were coming here, if we were evaluating it, it would have been better.

This topic comes up for discussion almost every day. Since we never lived anywhere other than NY, I'm not sure if we can. I mean, if we had to, I'm sure we could but since we like it here so much, would we be able to be happy some place that's completely different?
So we had friends from residency go to a high paying job in the middle of nowhere, and my friend has told me she wishes they had chose location over cash. Her words "I have learned money doesn't buy happiness." We took a lower paying job, but love the area and the job we are in. Dh and I talked about this last night, that we could have taken more money elsewhere, but we wouldn't have been happy because of distance from the things we love- ie family, or he would have been working his hiney off or would've been abused by the partners, both of which are not happening.

We wanted to stay in the Northwest but the job market is tight. Now we want to go somewhere DH can get a job that doesn't use and abuse him out of training in a family friendly community.

We thought, like Annie, we'd have a lot more control than we do.

I moved a total of 12 miles and one school district when my daughter was in high school, and it was HORRIBLE. Good luck.
