What is it about the practice of law and medicine that makes people want to work as long and as hard as possible for their money?

My goal is to work as little as possible for as much money as possible.

Isn't that the definition of the American Dream....minus the 40 acres and an ass(most of us already have one or more of those anyway )?

You would think so, but all of these aforementioned surgery programs love overworking and getting divorces because of it. I just think it is annoying. Thankfully there are areas that are less demanding.

          Dorky is right!

i agree something HAS to give. i am only in my second year of medical with my significant other but this is driving me crazy! i think you can do both but as much as the SO must be willing to bend so too must the doctor to what is important to both. i think it depends a great deal on what the two of you can handle. not as if i know just yet!!! but, i have learned through this experience i need a lot of time or more than most i think. thus, i am one to say that if my SO really cares she will choose something that is hourly friendly knowing that i am willing to work with her schedule but not maybe as much as others. FAMILY should be the most important thing. and no matter how much you should support the doctor spouse he/she must be willing to make concessions i think. if they are not, what does that say about the two of you???
