I just read your latest entry in your blog about your DH's shaken baby case and I wanted to comiserate (sp?) with you. I've gotten to the point where I've told my Dh to not even tell me about those cases because they are just too upsetting. I feel bad for my Dh because I know these cases are upsetting to him too, but now that I've had my dd I get a heart-wrenching, stomach-punched feeling when I hear about those poor babies. Fortunately, now that he is in his final year of residency, he has not had to see any shaken baby cases recently

Your response of wanting to spend the day snuggling with your ds is exactly how I've responded. All I want to do is hold my dd - as if by holding and loving her, I could somehow prevent another baby from being hurt by (usually) dad/step-dad/boyfriend.

My wife had a peds-neuro rotation while pregnant with our son.
She had some horrible congenital cases, which freaked her out, but even worse were the baby shakers, and one heroin addict who caused major brain damage to his infant daughter by some unspeakable acts.

Agreed. I've often said that I would NEVER be able to work with kids - specifically neuro or peds NICU where they'd see the crack babies or shaken babies. I figure I would end up in jail for killing one of the "parents' and be no use to anyone.

Hugs to all who do that work! You're stronger stock than I am!

          Thanks

I cried the whole time I was writing about it, but it helped so much to share, get it off my chest so I had somewhere to put it. Usually DH doesn't like to talk about those cases, but last night really got to him.

It is just the most horrible thing I can imagine.
