  • Have you hugged your landlord?

Because if you are renting, and have a nice landlord, you should.

I am homebound today because our garage door is completely broken. Good thing I put off going to the grocery store, huh?

I'm grateful for the warm weather we are having because we are still "in conversation" (arguing) with the furnace guys about a difference of opinion on a repair. The furnace is working but the less it has to do the better. Argh!

    Gah, that sucks.

Is it an old door? There should be a pull hanging from the chain that moved the door that you can pull to manually open it up.

    More info on garage doors...

Thanks but nope -- can't open it manually. I tried and DH tried. The opener is working fine, it's the actual door and one of the hinges on the panel.

Phew. The garage door is fixed and I can go to the store to indulge my nacho craving.

The good news is that it was something we probably could not have fixed, didn't require any parts, and I found a $10 off coupon for the service call. And, he thinks that our old door and opener will make it another 2 or 3 years. All I need is 1 year and 4 months.

The previous owners replaced one of the cables on the door but not the other, presumably to save money ($25). I mean, I understand not paying more than you have to but it ended up costing more to get it fixed later. Par for the course on so many of our appliances, etc. The tension wasn't equal and pulled one side more than the other which made one of the hinge/roller dealies pull off (or it was loose anyway). He gave the door and all the parts a good check so hopefully it will hang in there a little while longer.

The furnace guy has made an acceptable offer on the repair situation. A quarter of the original quote and half of the second quote. WooHOO!
