  • Bad storms!

We had some bad storms go through here last night. We watched them on radar, and finally got the kids up and all went into the laundry room.....well, all of us but DH, who had to keep looking out the window! Everything ended up being fine, but we have some shingles on our roof that have lifted, in two different places.

I got freaked out this morning, though, because DH told me he saw the swings on our swingset completely horizontal, like they were being held there, when he was looking out the window last night. The thing that freaked me out was that the storm/winds came from the opposite direction that the swings were blowing, which indicates to me that there was a little rotation going on at my house!

More storms are expected tonight, and then a double whammy tomorrow.

I really wish we had a basement!

What does that mean? Like a little mini-tornado in your back yard?

      Yikes!

I'm not sure I could live in the mid-west for that very reason. I was once stuck in the basement of an institution with a co-worker and 15 men with severe behavioral problems. That about did me in for tornados!

I don't know that I would go so far as to say there was an actual tornado going on, but things were definitely unstable! The storm came from the northwest, but the swings were being held up by a burst of air that had to be coming from the south, because of the direction they were blowing. I am glad I didn't see that last night!

We actually had a storm cellar at our last house. It was at the back of our backyard, and you had to climb down a little wooden ladder/stairstep thing to get in there. I used it one time with Nathan, and let me tell you, the LAST thing you want to be doing when the sirens are going off, the sky is green, and the rain is horizontal is running across your backyard carrying your little one, a flashlight, and your cell phone. It is a wonder we didn't get killed getting in there.....the rain made the ladder steps very slippery, and the metal door conked me in the head on the way down.....the wind was blowing so hard I couldn't keep it up.

I really, really wanted a house with a basement when we moved for this very reason, but there were some other features I wanted as well, and our budget wasn't big enough to get everything we wanted. That is a big reason that I think we will move again, even though neither DH or I like to really think about it due to the work involved.....

Oh Sally, how frightening! I am so glad that you and your family are safe after last night's storm. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that the storm tonight will pass you by. I would take an earthquake over a tornado anyday!

I was thinking of you last night, Sally while watching the weather channel. I bet it was scary, I didn't realize you don't have a basement in your house. We got hit with some hail. One of the local networks said there were 86 mile/hour winds in Marion County. I hope it doesn't happen again. Glad everyone is okay.

Yikes...as a native Kansan (and I'm sure Matt and others can relate), I remember many a day/night spent in the basement and looking out to see the green sky. I've also run through the horizontal rain!!! I'm glad you are ok, Sally!!

I can sympathize Sally. I would be frightened w/o a basement, too. We're just starting to learn about the green sky and horizontal rain. We love to watch the clouds here --- and the crazy winds (when they're not scary winds). I try to remind myself that the poor trailer parks seem to get it the worst.

                    Hi Sally~

I was watching the weather channel last night.....all I heard over and over was seek shelter and cover yourself with a blanket to protect from debris. The thing I didnt hear was where all this was taking place. I hope you and the family are okay! Check in when you can!!!
