As requested, here are my favorites/recommendations for the Monterey/Carmel area in California.

Yummy restaurants: (I will warn that my DH and I are food and wine snobs, some of these are proably pretty pricey.)
    Tarpy's http://www.tarpys.com/

    Pacific's Edge Restaurant (Warning - pricey!) http://highlandsinn.hyatt.com/hyatt/...ants/index.jsp

Blue Moon (on Fisherman's Wharf - we watched the otters play while we ate)

The Lodge at Pebble Beach- Stillwater Bar & Grill (great views for a sunset dinner)

The Lodge at Pebble Beach - Gallery Cafe (great for breakfast)

    Places to stay

Monterey Plaza Hotel (VERY pricey - we haven't actually stayed here, a friend got married here - this is probably one to file away for when you're done with training)

Cannery Row Inn (More "reasonable" for the area, clean, nice continental breakast)

The Lodge at Pebble Beach (also for that post-training trip, we didn't pay for our stay)

Tickle Pink Inn - we didn't actually get to stay here because they were booked but my ILs rave about this place, my MIL thinks it is "so cute!"

    Things to Do
Fisherman's Wharf, shopping, hanging out, gorgeous views

Seventeen Mile Drive - beautiful views, get out of the car and visit the Pebble Beach golf shop while you're there. If you're a golfer you can even putt on the practice green without being chased off.

Justin's Winery - this is in Paso Roble's, a little bit of a drive but well worth it if you have a day. I think reservations are recommended.

Ok, I know I'm missing some but this is what I can think of off of the top of my head - I'll ask DH tonight and post somemore!

I'm going to have to file this away. Sounds like it would be a great trip.

I've had the Justin Obtuse and forgot it about until now. Thanks for the reminder!

It's absolutely beautiful. Don't forget The Aquarium! If you go early, you can miss the big crowds, and they have touch pools for kids (and adults) where you can touch sea creatures (including rays!).

I've only glanced at these, but I will definitely take a closer look at the lovely list you've put together as we plan our trip. Maybe we should compile lists for where we live and travel destinations? I trust recommendations so much more than travel books.

My parents stayed at the Tickle Pink--it's in Carmel, right? They liked it, but said it could use some fixing-up.

Do any of you know about the Best Western on the water in Monterey? I heard it's comparable price-wise to the Tickle Pink.

We did a lot of what Cheri's got on her list.

We went to The Grill in Carmel (on Pacific Ave), and loved it. It was a toss up with Chianti. I wanted some crab cakes, and The Grill had it on their specials that day.

We stayed at the Best Western on the Beach in Monterey. That's what it's called--and they market themselves as being the only hotel directly on the beach. We originally booked a room NOT facing the ocean (it's just a place to sleep, right?), but when we got there and I saw that the non-ocean rooms were facing the freeway and the backside of a Home Depot, I begged at the reception desk for an ocean room and we got one, without having to pay for the upgrade!!! There were dolphins (I think) dancing in the early morning and at dusk. Wow!

The Aquarium in Monterey boggles the mind. We got there at around 11am, and it progressively got packed with kids. Kids ALL OVER THE PLACE! What an awesome place for them-and for us too! It's an unbelievable aquarium
