Any Hem/Onc spouses here?

My dh is not in hem/onc, but for all your residency/fellowship desires for most programs you can use FREIDA. Now, FREIDA has definite flaws. Al lot of programs don't put up their info, but here is a list with a starting point for you.

Looks like a 3 year fellowship after 3 or 4 years of IM residency. Sounds long to me, but I know others on here go longer. Well, I guess after fellowship here we will be at 6 years.

SO is an IM resident now, and hopes to do a 3-year fellowship after a chief year (not Hem/Onc tho). I think there were few things he could have combined with IM during residency - Med/Peds would have been a 4-year residency, instead of 3 years, and he would have been board certified in IM and Peds. I think fellowship is something to consider for the kind of specialty your DH is interested in. Ugh, I know, more training. Yippee...

I'd also point you towar FREIDA as a good starting point.

One of DH's friends from med school did IM and then hem/onc for fellowship. I think he is still doing it right now and that it is 3 yrs (at the program he is in). Chief years always help for fellowship so be ready to throw in an extra year for that. I think that most or all IM programs have the chief year as an additional year (some other programs have a chief/s for the last year of training).

Yeah, my husband was told that with his high board scores and Honors on every rotation that he was a shoo-in for any residency program his heart desired especially since EM is not considered an overly competitive field. We were built up so high that it was a very unpleasant surprise when we matched further down the rank list than we'd expected. We still ended up at a great program that in many ways is better for us than the programs we ranked higher. But the reality is that good numbers don't buy a good match. There's a networking aspect, a being a good interviewee aspect, just basically playing the game I guess.

Chances are, your husband is going to have no problems with a successful match and will in fact write his own ticket! Congrats to him on his grades and academic accomplishments, that's awesome. I don't mean to rain on your parade, but I do want to introduce the (slim) chance that things won't be totally smooth sailing every step of the way.
