We're still here but in a different room. It's much much better than the first one. I think they put him in that other room since he's not paying full price for the room and they figured they could save a buck or two on him. Now we're on the fifth floor, right above the entrance. I don't mind the noise one bit. I used to live on a busy downtown street in Bistrita and I can sleep anywhere. If anything, I think it's more difficult for me to fall asleep in complete silence.

I looked for other hotels and I still have the web page open but the thing is this is the most convenient location for him and now that we moved to this room it's not unbearable anymore. If the whole hotel was like the first room where the cat pee and moldy smell hit you like a ton of bricks, then we'd definitely move. You know, we joked about this last night but it's true. He'll have no problems in residency because he puts up with everything and doesn't complain. He totally needs me to speak up for him. I don't know, I think I could give Heidi a run for the title of bitter troll (future) wife.

It's pouring now in Miami and I wish I could open the curtains but I don't want to be on display. Now I'm glad I packed as much as I did because my first thought was "it's always sunny in Miami, why would I need this?"

Wait a minute, you have to live there? I don't remember it smelling like cat urine, but there were ants all over the sink. We were so tired that we didn't complain, although in retrospect, ants in the sink?! WTF? The rooms over the entrance are probably much much better than the room we had. But I wanted to be able to see our car from the window!! Even though it was a rental car, I didn't want it to be gone the next morning!

I know there's hardly anywhere to live around the hospital, but what about somewhere closer to downtown? There's the waterfront mall closeby; is there a hotel near there? What will you be doing while you're there?

He has to live here this summer while he's working on a research project, so he has a little over a month left. I'm only here for a week, thank God.

Only the first room had that terrible smell so I don't think the entire hotel has that problem. We haven't seen ants yet and he claims he hasn't seen any roaches.

          Why all the Miami bashing?

I got stuck in Miami returning from my first honeymoon and I actually thought it was great (see the recommendations for Cuban food and coffee). I'd like to see it without Montezuma's revenge though. (lesson learned: don't swim in Acapulco Bay)

I think the bashing has been mostly confined to the Days Inn across from the hospital.

I like Miami too. I have never lived there, but I'm from Florida originally. I have lots of relatives and friends in Miami that have lived there for over 20 years. It can't be all bad. I highly recommend the Cuban coffee and the nightlife. Avoid any class 4 or 5 hurricanes, though. (That's the only thing I know to have driven away life long Floridians.)

The Days Inn is probably owned by some of dh's relatives .... sorry. Several of his uncles own Days Inns, or shares or parts of Days Inns across the country.

In the Indian community, as soon as someone hears our last name they say "Do you have a motel?" (totally true -- happened less than a week ago while I was waiting for my haircut.)

I'm sure I can find you a hotel or motel that is just as bad or worse in Seattle, San Francisco, NYC, Louisville, or any of the other cities that I adore. It's funny, because I mentioned in an earlier post that I didn't mean to offend anyone but was just trying to be helpful.

" don't want to bash Miami, but a big reason we didn't rank Miami was because of it being... Miami. Neither of us were comfortable there. It was the same feeling I had in some sections of Baltimore when dh interviewed there... Am I putting my foot in my mouth here? I hope no one gets offended."

I didn't bash the city per se--only that dh and I were not comfortable there. It was not meant to offend people who have had different and positive experiences there.
