5 years - General Surgery
2 years - research in pediatric surgery
2 years - pediatric surgery fellowship
and we are on year 4, just starting the first year of research with 6 more to go!
Psychiatry - 4 years

Geriatrics 1 year
Child & Adolescent 2 years (one of them is the PGY4 above)
many other specialites, mostly 1 year
(Word on the street is that Gyn Onc might change to a 4 year fellowship. It already is at some institutions. So....beware!)
It was already like that at a third of the places DH interviewed at 2 years ago I am glad we ended up here, even if some of the 4 year spots were in warmer and more exciting locales!

We're at the beginning of his 3rd year in IM and he's not sure what to do next but definitely wants to further specialize or switch to a surgical field, so we're looking at probably 5-7 more years of training. Seems like it will never end at this rate.
