Mid-Life Crisis?

So, my normally sane husband has decided he wants a motorcycle. Every day he's surfing eBay or some other site looking at motorcycles.

Now, you would think that having just finished a fellowship in child neurology, where he did a year of adult neurology that the thought of brain injury might have occurred to him?

His answer- he'll take a safety course. That's what he wanted for his birthday (he got South Park dvds).

His rationale is that he use the bike to go to and from Fort Hood (3 hours away) and it'll save gas. I think I'd prefer that he take the Audi and save his brain.

Anyone have a spouse with a motorcycle? do you sleep? I'm so not into this.

DH drove a Vespa in Boston for 3 years. Does that count?

He also wants a motorcycle, but I keep steering him towards the Porche. I even found a local auto racing club and hooked him up to test drive some. It's my way of keeping him out of the motorcycle seat. We can't afford the Porche for awhile. I'd rather have THAT midlife crisis car than the motorcycle.

While in Boston, the Vespa was very fuel efficient. It took 2 gallons of gas and let him commute for a week and a half. He slid out once on icy trolly tracks and hurt his shoulder. After that he was more likely to take public transportation in the snow. All and all, it wasn't a bad experience - but the Vespa only does 50 mph and never went on a highway.

ETA: Parking was a dream with the Vespa as well. That thrilled him. We'd pull up anywhere and just lock it up on the sidewalk.

No advice, but LOTS of sympathy. I have a friend here, former nurse, whose husband (chemical engineer who works for Lilly) rides a motorcycle as often as he can......I always wonder how she stands it. I was behind him in the 'burban yesterday, leaving a soccer game, and I was petrified on his behalf.

Maybe a chat with some ER docs or brain surgeons or both is in order?

oooh. that is such a surprise. i hate the things, so i totally sympathize. perhaps you could point out the sheer size / magnatude of bugs he'll be running into?

sure - ice won't be a problem, and sure - HE'LL take a safety course, but what about all of the other jackasses?

Oh man, do I feel for you. The risks do not outweigh the benefits of saving some gas money, IMO.

DH's uncle used to commute on a motorcycle until a car ahead of him kicked up a piece of road debris and it pierced his helmet (the plastic part that covers his face.) He lost control and crashed. Thankfully he didn't have any life threatening injuries, but he did have a major eye injury and some facial injuries.

With all of the deaths that he has seen from motorcycle accidents, there is no way DH will ever get on one.

Our medical community here is still upset about losing one of our gyn/onc guys and this was many years back. His wife bought him a motorcycle for his birthday, he didn't have it a year before he was killed.

That made my stomach hurt. My DH always teases me that he should get one....I would vote no.

My brother in law lost his dad a little over a year ago. He and his riding buddies were stopped @ a red light not far from their homes . They had just been on a trip to Yellow Stone and were returning home to thier loved ones, when some woman just simply didn't notice all six bikers stopped ahead of her @ the red light. She plowed into all of them, injuring many and killing his dad. Obviously had he been in a car things might have been different.

We had a MINI, his name was Nigel. He was my true love car. We had to break up when I stopped working and didn't need a car.

He was Yellow with jaunty white stripes. He was also gay. I don't know how I knew that but I did.

oddly enough, the current deal between my gf and I is that I can get a motorcycle if she can get a mini.

edit: I should note that just because I also have the idea of getting a motorcycle doesn't mean I don't see the potential problems with it.

That would scare me, too! DH calls people who ride motorcycles organ donors. Aren't you guys Pittsburgh Steeler fans? What about Ben R.
