I sound like a big ol' scrooge when I say this...but I hate all those school fundraisers. It's that time of year when all the neighborhood kids are selling the same junk giftwrap, candy, popcorn...the kids are so excited to sell enough stuff to earn prizes (more junk) and you can hardly say no to those eager little faces. There are better ways for schools to earn money. Last year DD's preschool ran almost a dozen fundraisers selling various sorts of stuff -- I decided to just make a donation to the school instead.

The funny thing is that we're not talking about moving midwest, we're talking about NJ/CT/PA or may be DC suburbs. I don't think that's so drastically different (or I wouldn't be moving ). We just decided that we want a quiter lifestyle with an option of spending a weekend in a big nearby city. We're not moving to the moon.
I hate all those school fundraisers

I hate when my child comes home with the catalogues for that crap and is so eager to win the prizes that someone so raved about. Gee, thanks!
Our former preschool did a great fundraiser that allowed you to purchase items ranging from notecards to t-shirts to coffee mugs with your child's artwork printed on it. The quality was great and they made great gifts. I would buy that but not much else. (I know you can do this at Kinko's but the quality of this stuff is better).

It is such a marketing scam, but for some reason the PTOs like these fundraisers.
Nellie, I like the sound of children's artwork. I would totally buy those.Married to pediatric surgery fellow, SAHM to 2 munchkins

Originally posted by ellieUgh, the way those companies rave about those prizes. They gather all the kids in the auditorium and do a huge AV presentation...slides, music, the works...and work up the anticipation..."if you sell 20 pieces of crap, you'll get....this prize!...and guess what? if you sell just 40 pieces of crap...you'll get ...big drum roll...this bigger prize!" And the kids all let out this collective gasp.

Our preschool just did a fundraiser that must have netted them a bundle, but was really easy on the parents. They asked parents to donate old Happy Meal toys (for prizes), hot dog buns, hot dogs, baked goods, etc. Then they held a carnival. Silly little games where a kid wins a prize each time, and hot dogs to buy, baked goods at the bake sale. Parents just came in and bought tickets (I laid out $5 whole bucks!), games were 1 ticket each, and you could even use the tickets for food. All of the families participated, and probably dropped between $5 to $20 - but it was all net for the school! Parents volunteered to run the games, work the counters, etc. And all it cost me was 1 pack of hot dog buns (they literally just asked for 1 pack) and $5.

Voice prompted answering systems that big companies use. HATE THEM.
I called the power company today while holding my 5 month old on my lap. They dont give you an option to press 1 for english or 2 for spanish, you have to say 'ENGLISH' but when the baby beats me to it by saying 'Ga', the phone system says, i am sorry I dont understand please speak your response, then I say 'customer service customer service customer service' and i hear ' sorry i dont understand, please speak your response'. Then I say '(*&^*^*(%^%&$ 'and i hear ' sorry i dont understand, please speak your response, say billing for the billing dept, say x for the x dept....... then the baby says 'waaah' and i hear 'sorry i dont understand that response, please speak your response, say .....
You have to be in a completely silent room with no children, tv, radio or background noise which doesnt happen very often with me.Mom to three wild women.

Hot off the presses!
I hate that people can't learn there are time zone differences. I don't think anyone should call me before 7am unless it is an emergency. My SIL called at 6:40am. I told her she woke me up. But, hey, now that you are awake can me loan some money?
