Off to the Chocolate Festival!

So, so jealous. Expecting a full report. I hope you find Christopher Elbow.

Where in God's name are you and can I come too?

Yeah - it wasn't so great. Christopher Elbow was there, but only giving the tiniest of samples, and I didn't feel the need to buy more.

There were chocolate fountains - but we'd missed the demo I was hoping to catch. Some good samples, but I'm not a huge chocolate fan (why did I go again?). The kids had fun and had cute chocolate faces, and I had a good time with our friend.

Chocolate would be the only reason I'd go back to Belgium. I'm not a big fan of chocolate either, but once we got there and I tasted the real thing, I couldn't get enough. Belgians turn their noses at Godiva and even Leonidas isn't considered that great. Neuhaus is passable but many tiny stores and bakeries make their own. Just thinking back, makes my mouth water.

I felt the same way when I was in Germany. Their white chocolate especially was to die for. I can find some German chocolate at World Market, but I don't really care for a lot of the American chocolates either.

American chocolate, at least the 'big names' are much sweeter than their European counterparts. And the European chocolates are meant to be savored, not inhaled, like we do here. (and again, why the obesity problem in the states?...)

Working at the chocolate factory in grad school turned me into such a chocolate snob. I wouldn't eat a candy bar from Hershey's or Nestle or Cadbury (since the Cadbury bars here are made by of the aforementioned brands) even if someone else bought it. Yuck.

the Russians are big into chocolates but there's often have hazelnut or hazelnut flavoring in them. I like it but lots of people don't.

Good chocolate is worth the splurge.
