  • Weird Superstitions

Since it seems many of us don't believe in Friday the 13th, I thought it'd be fun to exchange the weird superstitions we do believe in.

I always look in the mirror if I have to turn back (suppose to cancel the bad luck of turning back). And I never celebrate my birthday early even when more convinient than waiting a whole week until next weekend.

My mom has a whole a bunch of weird ones. Never put your purse on the floor or the money will fall out. Never clean until traveling family members reach their destination. Everyone has to sit down for a few moments before leaving on a long trip. It's bad luck to get married in May.

Bummer. I guess that explains a lot about my life.

My only "superstition" is that I whole-heartedly believe in the power of a jinx. I will not say that something is going to happen for sure until it has happened. i.e. "We're scheduled to close on the house June 1st." rather than "We're closing on June 1st."

In a similar vein, I won't make up a lie to get out of something, b/c I'm certian that the jinx gods will make it come true. I would never say "I can't go b/c the kids are sick", unless they ARE sick, b/c I know they will GET sick if I say it.

I remember the one about getting married in May. Maybe it only counts if you marry Russian or Ukranian men in May? (things to remember if I don't like my future DIL)

I also believe in the jinx- the kinehara (spelling) according to my Jewish room-mate from college. I never assume things will happen and when I'm forced to- like having to sign the documents for settlement before the event- it felt so wierd. and look how that turned out!

Some more- never give a purse or wallet to someone without putting a coin in it first. Never give an empty piggy bank. Throw salt over your left shoulder if you spill salt.

I'll think of some more later.

My dad is retired military so we moved ALOT. Everytime we moved duty stations my mom would leave the old broom, mop, and dust pan at the house we were leaving from; and buy a new one for the new house. The belief is you leave your old dirt and and old problems, and don't take them with you when you move. Now that I am married I do the same thing. Dh thought I was weird at first.

Jenn, not sure if it only counts for Russian men but the saying only makes sense in Russian because May is the root of mayatsya (similar to misrable but not quite as strong). The hall I wanted had a date available in early May or April 13th. My mom's fear of getting married in May won over her fear of the 13th.

What year did you get married? DS#1 was born 4/13/01.

On New Year's Eve, we eat Sauerkraut and put our shoes outside with a penny inside them. We retreive them in the morning and then you make a wish for the coming year and throw the coin. (I believe this is of German origin, is this right?)

My SO broke his arm once on Friday the 13th, but it has always been a lucky day for me. 13 is my favorite number. I don't like even numbers outweighing odd numbers in my telephone numbers. Seriously, when I got my cell number the guy thought I was nuts. They actually didn't have any numbers that meet my criteria and it still bothers me every time I write it out.

Throw salt over your shoulder if you spill it. Don't sign a receipt in red pen. Macbeth.

We have a lot of superstitions on our Recruiting Board at work. Gotta keep the good ju-ju.

I can't think of anymore right now, but I'll keep thinking... I love that about the broom and dustpan. I think I'll do that from now on, but i'm taking my Swiffer Wet Jet with me. :>

My folks open up all the doors in the house at midnight on December 31st to let the new year in. Yes, in Alaska. LOL.

My mom learned from her mom that if you drop a spoon and pick it up, you'll be disappointed. During my childhood the kitchen floor was littered with spoons that were waiting for someone who was not the dropper to pick them up. Eventually mom gave that one up though. Too impractical.

I thought it would have been neat if I'd had this kiddo on Friday, October 13th. Talk about a birthday to be proud of! It was never truly meant to be (I'll definitely be going past my due date) but I stayed a little hopeful until the day had passed.

I like Crystal's broom and dustpan superstition! Might have to start doing that one...

Oh, and I got married in June because the ancient Greek goddess Juno is supposed to oversee happy marriages. But that was just a whim, not so much a superstition. [/i]

                      Macbeth.
Are you freakin' kidding me!?!?! Now you have to run around my computer 13 times and spit! And when your computer gets a virus you will know it is because you uttered the name of The Scottish Play or McB or The Cursed Play...there are numerous euphemisms....

O.K. so probably it is only cursed if said in a theatre, but I honestly can't get the full title out of my mouth in a theatre or not, except while in service to the play. (You are allowed to say it while rehearsing it or performing it.)

I am an annoyingly rational person, but I uphold all theatre superstitions. i think when you mess with reality the way theatre does, you shouldn't tempt the fates.

So…no whistling in the theatre, do not say the name of The Scottish Play, pay homage to the ghost and respect his/her place in the space, no mirrors or real money on stage...

I do also follow the salt over the shoulder business.

DH won't let me ask how a work day is going until it is over. So I don't jinx him into call back hell.

Haha, I'm sorry! (Actually, I'd be quite pleased if this computer got a virus b/c it would mean I could leave this stupid job and go home. )

I believe in it, but only in a theatre. I love theatre superstitions though. Most of my friends were actors in college and so I was always around them.
