  • iMSN weekends are dead

Why is it that for a bunch like us, whose SOs are likely to be just as busy on the weekends as during the week, the boards are dead during the weekend? I think this question has been asked before but never truly answered.

I'm sitting here, one hour into my second day as a med school "widow". That's right, this is the closest my fiance has been to being "on call". He's doing 18 hours in the ER so this is one of the few nights on which we won't get to talk. Surely one of many more nights to come.

I've been around! Really! But you're right, it's really quiet today.

I'm fuming. It's past 4pm, no sign of dh, and there's nothing left to salvage of today. When/if he calls, I'm going to tell him to just spend the night at the hospital, because it's going to really suck if he comes home only to have to turn around and go back again.

Is Miami still in the cards for you? Were you thinking of residency there or was your SO just rotating through?

He had just finished his first year and he did some summer research at Miami. It may be an option in the future but we still have some time to think things through before applying for residencies. We contacted a current fellow who'd finished med school in Ecuador a few years ago and she mentioned doing her last year in Miami so that's something we're looking at as well. His school has exchange programs with several schools in the US, such as Miami and Emory. I'm torn between the two options, as I don't particularly like either but I *think* Emory is a tad better. Any opinions?

Oh and it must really be a bad day for you guys. How does home call end up with a doctor in the hospital for most of the day? Has he called or anything? Is he starving yet?

I don't know anything about Emory.
It's an exciting time for you! Enjoy the traveling while you're young and before the bitterness sets in. :>

I'm thinking about making dinner plans with some friends. I haven't heard from dh since around noon, right before he went in for the second operation. I feel badly for ditching dh at home, should he come home sometime today, but I think I've got to get on with my day... As much as I wished we could have spent some time together today. Oh well. Wasn't meant to be.

Mine's actually covering the peds ward today. This is the weekend that all of the peds interns, residents and families go off for two nights and two days. We loved as residents, now it's payback time.

He was funny- he hasn't dealt with 'regular' sick kids in over three years now. He was actually a little bit nervous!

I say go for it. Spending a whole day waiting for him entitles you to a fun evening. Maybe he'll be able to join you guys if he doesn't get home too late.

He just called. You must have some sort of psychic powers!
I'm going to call friends anyway and have dinner with them. Otherwise, I'm afraid that all I'll do is yell at him this evening. Of course, friends aren't meant to be the punching bag for this, but I need some time to think about other stuff rather than how this residency sucks the life out of me.

dh's cousin really loves emory. she went there for undergrad and returned for residency - now finished and staying there. she likes the mulit-culutral experience and apparently doesn't mind the heat.

i'm usually around on the weekends - but we had somewhere to go tonight.

I heard great things about the medical school itself but awful things about the city. How does she like Atlanta?

she loves, loves, LOVES Atlanta - but I cannot explain why (I'm not a fan). I know Suwanee went there - and I think a few others have lived there, so perhaps they can give some insight.

I know that dh's cousin is Indian (obviously) and has always connected strongly with the African-American community. I don't know if she thinks there is a stronger positive presence or acceptance of African-Americans - or people of color - as a whole, or what. But she truly loves it there and intends to make it her home. She went to Cincinnati for med school and hated every minute of it.

I love Atlanta. My DH and I both went to undergrad at Emory and had a fabulous time. Atlanta isn't really the south...it's more like a misplaced northern city, IMO. People are from all over the place and there is so much diversity, everywhere. Plus, There is so much to do in Atlanta and at Emory...all the time. And the best thing about Emory is that there is so many things just going on campus (for free)...music events, art events, political speakers. It's fabulous.

As for the heat, I can't comment...I'm orginally from Texas.

We've applied to go back there for residency...so we'll see.

I grew up in a suburb of Atlanta (Alpharetta) and I wish that DF didn't like Chicago so much so that at some point we could go back! It is absolutly beautiful and the people are all sooo nice! And Emory is a BEAUTIFUL place! As for the heat, it doesn't really get much hotter than anyother place in the summer (80-90) and you just dont get the snow in the winter but it still at times gets down to the 40s or 50s at night and then is in the 60s or 70s during the day...so really its like a nice version of Flordia (without such extreme heat and humidity) so i would def go for Emory over Miami!!...thats my 2cents
