  • Anyone at Denver Health Medical Center?

DH and I are really trying to figure out what living options we would have in Colorado for residency. DH said this residency shares medical insurance costs - anyone there and want to say what they pay monthly for health insurance?

Any other tidbits about this place would be great

We're at Denver Health right now. For DH, myself, and DD, we pay $64.85 per pay period. We have the cheapest plan though (getting care at Denver Health Med Center). The co-pays and deductibles aren't as good as when he was at country, but I think they're competitive.

What is his pay period? How long has he been there? And what is his specialty? I'd love to have someone to hang with if we matched there
How affordable has it been for you to live there? We are currently working with an agent to get a feel of condo or home prices in the surrounding area.

in my experience *malingnancy* in a program is really confined to specialty. there can be perfectly wonderful programs at the same facility.

It depends on where you are coming from, but Denver is on the expensive side. Outlying suburbs are less expensive, as usual, but obviously add to the commute. Some suburbs stretch waaaaay out so Lakewood could be a 15 drive or a 45 min drive. We moved from central Denver (by the med school, not Fitz) 2 years ago.

You may want to PM spotty_dog (she just had a baby and might not be able to respond) but I think they looked at Denver Health. My husband was in the IM program at CU and rotated through DH but didn't do his residency through there so I can't answer.

In terms of insurance coverage, I didn't work at DH but worked with people in the peds dept and administration. I think you would have good care though the clinics can get a little crazy.

It will always be DG to me! (Denver General)

Denver Health is the county hospital and lives up to the reputation of a county hospital in a larger city. In that regard, I would say that it tends to be the most challenging location to rotate through of the CU residency affiliated hospitals (University, VA, Rose, DH) for most or all specialties. In terms of an EM residency, it is probably great training.

Actually, DH completed his ER residency at (Stroeger) Cook Country in Chicago so this is a step-down on the "urban experience" scale. He's here to do a fellowship at Rocky Mountain Poison Center. He is also moonlighting at University Hospital. Most of the residents we talk to seem pretty happy.

Real estate prices will seem high or low depending on where you move from. We couldn't afford to buy anything on one salary in Chicago but we got a 3 BR/2.5Bath townhouse for $149,000 here in Denver. It depends on a lot of factors. We don't live in a particularly trendy neighborhood but it's safe and Dh's commute is less than 20 minutes.

We've been here since July and will be here until June 2008. PM me if you need to.

No, not Chicago or a major metro area but probably on par for a bigger city.

That's great you found a condo for that price! Wow.
