I have a general questions for those of you who have your own personal/family websites. What are good places to start your own website for free? Is it difficult? I have a lot of pictures and a lot of friends who do not live close and it would be nice to have this option for them to go to. Thanks!!

Oh my! I think the last time I had a free site I was 17. I just did a quick search for free websites and I'm as lost as you are.
If all you need to do is share photos, have you looked at http://www.flickr.com , http://www.picasa.com or http://www.shutterfly.com ? If you need to share family news, I've used LiveJournal with great success. You could also link to your photo albums from there.
Did you consider a paid hosting account? You'd have so many more options with your own website. They're really cheap these days, as low as $5/month. Sorry I can't be of more help.Cristina
