I'm Karin. I can't even say I'm a lurker here. I just don't get on this board very much at all, but in my desperation to see if anyone knew anything about assignments, here I am. My husband is a 5th year Rads resident at Lackland in San Antonio. His program is a joint program with the Army. The Army guys were given their assignments a few days ago (like maybe the 12th or 13th). We're still waiting. And waiting. And waiting.

The very latest rumor is that there are funding cuts and people who are here can expect to stay here rather than PCS. Wilford Hall is supposed to be gaining something like 5 or 6 Staff members in the Radiology Dept. Fine by me. My husband is in the radar for an overseas assignment. I'd much rather stay here, although I didn't pre-enroll my little ones anywhere and now I will be scrambling to find a school.

The rads spot at Bitburg AFB in Germany is open, as is one in Yokota, Japan. Supposedly, someone volunteered for the rads opening in Korea.

I also know that the spot at Tinker is being vacated and will need to be filled. Its a one man shop. One man shop = 100% call, I think. Scary.

My profound sympathies to whoever was assigned to Goodfellow in San Angelo. Holy cow.

With the BRAC at Wilford Hall, I'm sure that things are in flux. Has your hubby heard when the programs are going to combine ? Peds is supposed to combine in 2007. We had heard February but obviously that's not right.

At least we know we have another person in San Antonio! Welcome and if you hear anything, do let the rest of them know.

So it somehow makes me feel better to come here and announce that we have NOT heard @&*% and have no idea when we will hear something. There. I feel better.

Effective in the next few months rads at Wilford Hall will be rotating through BAMC. BAMC's rads dep't is apparently seriously understaffed and Wilford Hall is expecting to have a glut of radiologists beginning this next summer.

Therefore, if you are rads at Lackland expect to be splitting time between both locations (Wilford Hall and BAMC). This will officially begin in April, I believe, for the attendings. It should be firmly in place by July when the influx of new attendings hits Wilford Hall.

Keep it in mind if anyone is heading out here/staying here.

Call the placement officer at Randolph and see what they say! I can't believe that you all haven't heard YET.

DH emailed someone (obviously not someone high enough on the food chain. Do the people at Randolph really know?) earlier this week and the response was "there is an 80% chance that you are headed to Wright-Pat". Gee, thanks - especially considering that is completely opposite of what he said 3 weeks ago. I asked DH to give me the email address. He wouldn't do it even though I guaranteed him that we would have an answer by the end of the business day.

I'm incredibly frustrated. Frustrated doesn't even begin to cover it. I could understand if the situation was complicated but it's really not. Through this fellowship, he has become more specialized and so can only go to A or B. Why is it so hard to tell us if it is A or B?

Probably because some Col. hasn't come back from vacation yet from A or B and therefore everyone sits and waits.

and yes, all decisions apparently go through the office at Randolph.

                        FairQueen,

I know that you are disappointed, but I'm thrilled for my good luck.

I promise you, WPAFB is NOT that bad. Seriously. You can't beat the COL and it is at least a mid-sized to smaller city. (When you are talking military postings there are some REAL gems out there which could make life unbearable). WP is within 90 minutes of three larger cities: Cinci (50 minutes-yeah me!), Indianapolis (90 minutes-Yeah Sally and Jennifer a.k.a Phoebe), and Columbus (75 minutes-several members there).

Some great suburbs are Beavercreek, Springboro, Belbrook, Spring Valley, Oakwood (very old money), Kettering (mid range neighborhood on the East side, upscale on the Westside), Centerville (caveat-the schools are enormous in this district but have high achievement scores). Pretty much avoid Dayton proper. The nicer suburbs tend to be in the south. If private school is your thing, there is an accredited montessori school serving toddler through sixth grade right outside one of the gates of WPAFB.

You can join the Boonshoft museum for children. It is an amazing children's musuem for a city of this size. The minor league baseball team, the Dayton Dragons are supposed to be a lot of fun.

Let me know if you need anything else! Good luck!

                        Kelly

Oakwood is the one I mentioned before, where my friend lived. Really, really lovely - although probably not cheap. In comparision to CA though, it's dirt cheap.

AND Dayton has a Trader Joes. My theory is you can manage anywhere as long as you have a Trader Joes.

Your head is probably spinning, but in the grand scheme of military bases, Dayton is really more doable than it sounds.

Hey- you could have been sent to Enid, OK like some friends of ours. and let's not forget the fabulous hot spots for the AF in Texas- like Wichita Falls and San Angelo. (both lovely "cities" in the middle of nowhere!)

and jeez- San Antonio doesn't have a TJs.

There is a Trader Joes, and Ikea in Northern Cincinnati, about 35 minutes from Dayton. There is a fabulous new upscale shopping center called the Greens in Kettering, right of highway 675.

I digging deep for all the good Dayton news that I can think of....It is actually cheaper to fly into Dayton than Cinci. Seriously. A single airline has monopolized Cinci so a lot of people fly out of Dayton instead. There is a fabulous waterpark in Moraine. O.K. Moraine isn't an upscale neighborhood being located next to the factories and all, but it is totally safe for a family outing for the day. Kettering has a nice rec center that is dirt cheap to use compared to what we pay here for similar facilities in MSP.

I'm sure that there are moms' clubs there too. I'm trying to think what else I could throw at you to get you excited....I know what it is like to be disappointed with the location of an upcoming move. (See my former posts about my move to Minnesota).

                                Cheers,
