  • Advice on af assignments

    Hi all-
I am the husband of an 2nd year ER resident (my wife has a deferrment from the air force-HPSP). Just wondering if anyone has advice on assignments after residency.

We have checked out all the bases listed as having emergeny medicine and it is a long and diverse list. Let's just say some would seem better than others. We have our favorites but I am betting they are everyone's favorites (San Antonio, DC ect.) How much advance notice do you normally get and is there anyway to get an idea of the openings before hand- that way you can request something that is at least possible?

Any advice, thoughts or comments would be appreciated-
    Thank- jef

    Hi there-

Advice? Other than think positive thoughts, etc?

Well, I can tell you what the third year AF peds residents have done. They took it upon themselves to contact all of the AF bases to ask 1) If they knew of any openings 2)what were the working conditions (how many are there, what are the clinics like, etc and 3) How the people there seemed to like the area.

They then all gathered to compare notes and to figure out what the tally looked like. I think they found it helpful. They discovered some openings that they hadn't heard about yet. Unfortunately, because she's deferred that means there probably aren't a lot of people to help her with a massive list of places to call (there were seven of them to split up all of the bases).

As for the second part of your question, yes, DC and San Antonio are pretty popular spots. San Antonio is also the site of an ER residency and therefore the chances of landing here as a recently graduated resident are pretty slim.

Sally will be able to tell you more from the AF side of things.
