No military advice here, but another thing to do... have him close his eyes and go through a day in each specialty - they are VERY different. What does he see himself doing in 10 years, does he want to be in the ER or in the OR? One specialty may be more exciting or interesting now, but will he be happy doing it day in and day out for the next 40 years?
