He will have to set up some rotations at military training sites if he wants to be considered for match at those sites. The ppl at the DO school likely will not know much about this process. It will be easier for him when he knows if he wants to go medicine or surgery. If medicine, then in 3rd year he should try to do him Internal Med rotation at a military training facility. If he thinks surg, he should do the surgery rotation at the military site. The other smaller rotations he can do with his DO classmates. So if they can find local slots for rads, ortho, SICU, ob gyn, etc. that's all good. The big ones in ms3 (for name/face recognition come match time) are surgery and IM.

For MS4, he should look to do whatever he wants to rotate in first. My dh knew He wanted ENT. In July he rotated in Hawaii. In August he was in madigan. In September he was in Walter Reed. He did 3 ENT rotations. You have more electives in ms4, so you can choose to rotate in what program you are trying to match in. He left the things he knew he did not want to do for after October of ms4.

When my dh was a ms1 he wanted to do derm. He thought it would be perfect. He liked the hours, and the money on the outside, and the procedures. When he rotated through derm, he knew that it wasn't for him. The procedures weren't in depth enough, and the nature of derm is more analytical/diagnostic I guess you could say. A lot of biopsy and wait and see. He's not that patient for that. My point is that it's very hard to know what you like until you get in there and experience the clinicals. For most people things clear up a lot in ms3. It would be helpful right now, as a ms1, for your SO to figure out if he likes surgery or medicine more, and go from there.

Good luck--- and don't hesitate to ask questions. It's an overwhelming process.

This is a great place to express anxiety and talk through things. However, your dude *just* started, so he has a while before you need to freak out. Save the worry for boards and the match.

You can make it through this, I promise.

Hmm. You're right, he did just start. And now that I'm over my first bit of I'm just thankful for all the information these lovely ladies have given me Both B and I are planners (He plans because, well, that's just who he is. I plan because I am a worrier by nature and so I need to know what's going on, heh *blush*) and it seems that he has gotten a lot of misinformation... some from his recruiter (shocker, right? ) and some from classmates who are not HPSP, not military at all. And it is beginning to dawn on me that there's a LOT of planning ahead with med school, maybe even more so when you get the military involved (another shock ). It's nice to know what we have to plan for, approximately when we have to plan for it, that sort of thing.

Anyway thank you all I promise to try and not do too much unnecessary freaking out

Planning and medicine do not mix well. You'll get over that trait sooner than later.

            Word.

You'll eventually learn the fine art of discerning which topics to stress over and which ones are OK to let fall off your radar. It's totally normal.

If you two are planners, plan things like how to research residencies once he selects a specialty, or how you'll coordinate a potential multi-state relocation, etc. Those things won't change between now and the time they happen.

Have your dh get in contact with some other HPSP people when he's on break. Did he do the officer basic course yet? Way back when dh did this he took the course in the summer prior to ms1-- but they were mostly usuhs people there.

Anyway He should try to compare notes with someone who is about 1 year ahead of him (is there an hpsp ms2 at the DO school?) so he knows what's coming.

For the immediate future though, there really isn't much he can do as far as arranging rotations. So he should just focus on doing the best he can on exams and scoring well on the step 1 and 2. (Does he take step 1 and 2? I'm not sure how DO differs from medical school in that.)

I'm a planner too so I had many spreadsheets going at that stage! It was stressful! I have let go of the planning though-- I have enough with the kids schedules that I don't need to track dh too. He has access to the family calendar so hopefully he'll put on there the dates he's gone to conferences and what not. That's about all I can ask for.

DOs do the COMLEX, but they can also do the USMLE. If they're looking at competitive residency programs that only accept USMLE, they'll frequently take both tests. Yeah, that was a shit ton of fun, let me tell you...

lol oh lord 😳 We may well die, lol
You guys are great! I think I asked him the other day if there were any other HPSP folks there but who knows if he really heard me... Last block of tests before finals and he has hit that slightly unmotivated spot they say you reach at the beginning (at least in undergrad)... So now of course he's not doing as well as he would like and finals are a week from this coming Monday I believe. He can do it but I think this weekend he will mostly just be cooling off and then really hit the books come the start of the week... And you all really need to know all thus, lol 😳
But thanks again ladies, you are wonderful 😊

Lyssa if you ever feel bad about asking questions, don't. Way way back in the history of this site I was here asking about military scholarships--- before my dh even started med school. DCJenn answered so many questions... I felt like a pest then but now on this side of the conversation I know that she was just genuinely happy to help. As are we all. Please feel free to have your medical school freak outs here on the boards--- it's a support site!!!

And I've asked the acronym questions too!!!

It's totally normal to ask a shit load of questions. That's why this site exists and it's not only expected, but totally cool. We get it and would rather share the wealth of our collective knowledge and save someone the aggro than for them to have to learn the hard way.

                        Seriously, we've got your back.

Word. I have a nicely balanced Zinfandel that is making me not want to kill my children right now. Which is awesome considering all three were tap dancing on my last nerve an hour ago.
