So I was at BAMC today, registering my car. At Walter Reed, the soldiers who have lost limbs are treated. BAMC is a world-famous burn unit. In line in front of me was a kid who was clearly severely burned some time ago. He was obviously a soldier, he had the carriage and the haircut. So, while we're all waiting, a woman stops him and says "wow, I remember you, you're _______". She looks him straight in the eye and says "you look great!" This is a man with no nose, and half of his face burned. He had severe scaring on the left hand and had stubs of former fingers on his right hand. The right arm was still wrapped. I assume most of the right side of his body was wrapped because underneath the perfectly pressed dress shirt was a lumpiness on the right side.
She then turned to her companion and said, "I was here when he came in and he was in really bad shape." She then said, how much longer do you have to be here?" He says, "oh about a year." She says, "that's GREAT!"
She then asked him how he was doing and he said, "I'm great, my wife and I just bought ourselves a new car and that's what I'm registering today."
Kinda makes the rest of the problems of the day pale in comparison, huh.
