  • OBC

Hey everybody. I have a question about OBC. (My husband has a call in to someone but I know you all will be much faster!) We just found out he will do this before he goes to his assigned hospital (7/07). He won't be done with it until September but we were hoping to sell our house, be moved and settled before the school year started. My question is: If we move ourselves before we have orders will we be able to be reimburst for anything? I am guessing no, but I wanted to see if anyone else has had this experience and if you have any suggestions with this transition.

Do not do anything without orders!!! There have been way too many people whose orders have changed at the last minute. Besides, the report date may be much later than you think it will. (Ours wasn't until mid-August, friends of ours didn't have to report until September.) and to answer the specific question, no you will not be reimbursed for anything if you do it without orders. I won't even go house-hunting until I have SEEN the orders. Not just heard about them, talked about them, know that they're 'not ready yet' etc. Nope, I need to see them in black and white with copies in my hand before I call the travel office to arrange for any move.

and even then, orders can be changed.

OBC is six weeks. He probably won't do OBC anywhere near where he'll be stationed. OBC is fondly referred to as "knife and fork school" (As is they learn which knives and forks to use at the fancy dinners) by the enlisted guys because really, it's not like it's boot camp.

The orders for OBC will be separate from the orders for where he will be stationed. and they do OBC all year long- so he may not go when he thinks he's going to go, anyway.

The only thing you can count on in the military is that 1)nothing is ever for sure 2) your pay will be screwed up at least once and 3) you will never get your first choice of location.
