  • A Hooah weekend

This weekend as a part of the Fiesta celebration (if you all haven't yet been- it's ten days of carnivals, parties, and food that shuts down the entire city- but all to benefit non-profits)

Ft. Sam Houston opened its gates for the first time since 9-11 and had all kinds of cool stuff. They had all of the kids games like the moon bounce plus all of the Army equipment -the tanks, troop transporters and helicopters- and since it's home of AMEDD- all of the portable medical units like the portable surgical suite.

The Army drill team was there, the Fyfe and Drum corp from Ft. Myer, VA, the 82nd Airborne choir, and all of the recruits and students were in uniform and performed for the Base Commander. It was soooo cool. Since my husband was with the 82nd in his youth it was even neater.

Unfortunately, he was so inspired that he wants to start jumping again. I don't get it! But he thinks its the greatest fun humanly possible. I'll probably get him some jumps for our anniversary.

They ended the event with a half hour fireworks show.

Wednesday the Air Force has their big day at Lackland AFB. I would love to go but I have a meeting scheduled.

Hoo-ah! (that's Army for "Go Team")

    Jenn,

Sounds like a lot of fun! We didn't ever go to any of the "events" on either base/post -- I don't really know why, but I suspect that it was the last place my husband wanted to go if he happened to be off, and also both of us HATE crowds. We lived close enough to Randolph that we could see the air shows from our backyard, so that was cool.

The Wilford Hall Founder's Day celebration was going on in 1998 when my middle son was born. The residents kind of had the day off in order to participate in volleyball, etc., so all of my husband's friends were peeking in my room to say hi. That would have been fine except my epidural wasn't working and I was VERY uncomfortable and not exactly in the mood to chat.

So there you have my experiences with military celebrations.

Did your husband ever decide if he was going to volunteer for Korea in order to get his fellowship?

Our experience with military medicine has taken a sharp downturn since leaving residency. I don't feel comfortable posting the details, but the situation here is bad for my husband (and for patients) and there is so much military crap (i.e. my husband's "bosses" are nurses, a veterinarian, and a doctor who never practiced medicine, just went straight into administration) that the problem may not have ever been addressed if it weren't for the fact that they do deliveries at a civilian hospital and the dept. head there is aware of the problem.

If you would like details to the above oblique description, my email is trichardson@sprintmail.com.
