OK, this probably could go on the grand rounds page too -- I know there are plenty of you Mrs. MDs who enjoy the game -- but I thought I would try to give the Mr. MD section a little more love.

Anyway, some people at my work are starting a league and want it to cost $50 with no other fees. I'm thinking it would be fun and probably a way to get to know a few others in the office, but I can't help thinking that I would pretty much just be giving $50 to a co-worker. So much luck is involved in that stuff.

So would you do it? The pot would be pretty darn big if you were to some how win.

If many in your office are doing it, and you'd like to get to know them better, than do it. Consider your $50 an investment in your social life and never expect to see it again. If you want to do the former and are able to do the latter, then go for it.

Plus, if most folks do it, during football season you will be automatically shut out of a lot of conversations if you do not participate.

Perhaps the solution is to provide both a final winning pot as well as smaller amounts given out each week for perhaps both the winner and some novelty pick etc....

If it is really about socialization then this would work great, if it is about gamblers wanting to win it 'ALL' well....."I don't know anything about football" always worked for me...

I never do the FF pool in my office and it does effectively make me a pariah until January. Might be worth the $50.

There's not much of a social aspect here. There is about as much love for sports in my office as I have for my wife working her current night rotation. Most of the people I work with are women who don't care and even then many of the men there don't care either.

People who participate in sports pools here are the outsiders.

So it will be a small group, maybe 10, and in general I just think it would be fun. But I think I would feel better if it was more like $20 a person.
