And this just reminded me to order some spirulina. Seriously. I do things like grind my own flax seed, totally should have been in the video! But don't consider myself crunchy as I am a vaccine nut and am all about an epidural and love an expensive handbag. My good friend who was my doula, is exactly like everything in that video and much more! Crunchy don't play in Ann Arbor.

I didn't get the one about "elective c-section" was she mocking people who get c-sections? Because getting a c-section seems un-crunchy!

Another question... if you work, and you don't have your own office... where would you pump?

There are state laws that can and should protect your rights as a working/nursing mother. You should not have to go pump in a bathroom, ever.
Some places have a designated "pump room" or "privacy room" where women can go in, lock the door, and pump away.
Does anyone else who has dealt with this want to sign off on it, personally? (I SAH).

I think she was criticizing elective c-sections.

Re: pumping at work...ask the HR dept or your supervisor. There is usually a small room somewhere that locks and isn't a bathroom.

I was being tongue-in-cheek and would totally pump in the bathroom. I should've put a winky face in there: . I've breastfed in bathrooms several times depending on the particular circumstances, but every time I've done it I've thought about how it's not a granola-approved activity.

Depending on the office culture, though, I would also consider talking to HR about setting up a lactation room, even a temporary one like a supply closet you could hang a "do not disturb" sign on the door of a couple times a day. Or my car if I had one. I bet I could pump in the car?

I've pumped in the car, bathroom, sometimes I would lock the door to the lab if I was there early, wherever. I never found it necessary to ask for a specific room but that's not my way. Certainly HR can direct you to a place.

the last place I worked had a health room and nursing moms were able to pump in there. It was funny because there were 2 of us using it and we were constantly juggling the schedule.

I sort of doubt there's a state law here, at least. There are people pumping in the bathroom all the time, and I work in the capitol. At least it's a staff bathroom and not the public one, I guess.

We have a mothers room. Should have the one in my building all to myself. I'm spoiled.

Actually it is state law here. I think it is also now federal law too as part of the Affordable Care Act. Colorado established it before that however. My work offers a windowless closet/room with a table, chairs and a lock. Simple, but effective.

ETA: More detail. It was state law in CO in 2008 and became federal law with the Affordable Care Act. See the following blurb from the CO Department of Labor & Employment (http://www.colorado.gov/cs/Satellite...248095305263):

                          Colorado State Law
An employer shall make reasonable efforts to provide a room or other location in close proximity to the work area, other than a toilet stall, where an employee can express breast milk in privacy.
Reasonable efforts means any effort that would not impose an undue hardship on the operation of the employer’s business.
Undue hardship means any action that requires significant difficulty or expense when considered in relation to factors such as the size of the business, the financial resources of the business, or the nature and structure of its operation, including consideration of the special circumstances of public safety.

                          Federal Law
The location provided must be “a place, other than a bathroom, that is shielded from view and free from intrusion from coworkers and the public, which may be used by an employee to express breast milk.

I pumped once in my office at the University where I taught. My door was shut, but one of the male phd's walked in w/o knocking. He sure got an eyefull ... and actually couldn't look me in the eyes for quite awhile.

Well, good work, legislature, for following your own laws.

Or maybe we just don't have the financial resources. Ha.

I've nursed in a bathroom before (I forgot a hooter hider and just was too uncomfortable being totally exposed). I've also had to pump in stalls when I had jury duty or at a wedding when we were there too long. Ah, the joys of motherhood.

I have an office but it doesn't lock and my boss is notorious for walking in to offices without knocking. So I pump in the computer server room.
