Funny things kids say

Before my daughter started formal education and was introduced to the terms "black" and "white", she had Barbies that were "brown", "peach", and "orange". When she draws herself, she still uses an orange crayon, because she says she really is more orange than peach... I think it's rather beautiful to see the spectrum of colors that kids come up with for describing their friends and people in their world before it's all simplified to black and white, and maybe brown... My husband is brown (he's hispanic) and so for sure he'd never be insulted by a small child describing him as the "brown man"!

I've wondered about this before, though. I hate to try to educate little kids to see people differently based on skin color, but there have been some awkward moments...

I know what you mean--I never really wanted to teach her to "label" people based on their color. What's odd is that my husband is Asian and pretty dark complected and my daughters are both darker complected than me (I'm pretty fair and in the summer they get very brown) but I don't think it's ever occured to her that within her own family we are all different colors.
