I have a friend who just gave birth to a "Lucas" who they thought was going to be an "Alaina". I guess sometimes, knowing isn't really "knowing"

DW wanted a surprise, sort of. I couldn't stand the idea of the US tech knowing and me not knowing. If data is out there, I want it. Once I was finding out, DW needed to know too. I also thought it was terribly inefficient to come up with two lists of names. It was hard enough agreeing on one list. So we found out for all of them.

We did not find out with #1 and #2....for #3 he was such a surprise anyway we found out.

I loved not knowing with #1 and #2. It's one of the few true surprises left in the world. The anticipation of ..."It's a ......!" you can't put a price on that. It was magical.

With #3 I was thrown off by being pregnant again...it took a few days for it to sink in. He was supposed to be medically impossible. Knowing he was coming was a way for us to make his story different from the beginning. He has been on his own agenda from the beginning. He was upside down and my first C section. Finding out he was a HE was the only aspect of his birth that went smoothly.

We found out. It was still a surprise and it helped us bond with the baby before birth. (This is precisely the reason some people don't want to know. They don't want to bond with the baby in case the pregnancy isn't successful.) We found out super-early with Lambie, at 10 weeks when I had a blood test. After reviewing all the Latin and statistics in the report with my BFF who is a genetic counselor, I looked up at the top of the page and saw the word "Female." I had to repeat it three times for my friend and spell it for her, she was so shocked that I was finally having a girl after 3 nephews and 2 sons. The K Bros and I went to three different party supply stores buying up pink decorations and "It's a Girl!" balloons. We filled our living room, tied a pink ribbon around my belly, and waited for DrK to come home. Then photographed the boys with bundles of pink balloons and e-mailed the grandparents. It was so great.

We always found out. Our element of surprise was not picking a name until we saw each child.

We were going to find out anyway, but man I feel like it's needed this time. The toddler wants a baby sister and will accept nothing else. Very firm about it and hysterical at the mention of another brother. We need time for acceptance of it is indeed a boy!

Lol, oh yes, you need to find out for sure. I think you're having a boy but will hope for a girl for N's sake

We didn't find out with the first five. We just loved the whole process of wondering and choosing baby names. Baby six dh and I knew because I had so many ultrasounds and it was just a very high stress pregnancy after losing three babies before that we just kind of wanted to know. But we kept that secret to ourselves so we still got to surprise everyone else.

I prefer the surprise but either way is great. Folks do such fun gender reveal parties now.

                    Finding out

We will find out when #3 comes along, I think. I really want to know. But then again, it was a truly amazing surprise when both girls were born. But since it'll be my last pregnancy (maybe), I think I'd want to know to bond more with the baby.

Pollyanna, did people know that you knew? I kinda want to find out and not tell anyone we know.

We found out ahead of time with all four of ours. I find surprises to be annoying.

We know that my sister/her husband's baby is a boy. We knew before the embryo transfer because they screen the holy heck out of those little suckers.

I loved the surprise with both our girls.... but I'm torn on what to do next time. If we had one of each it would be easier, but with two girls I feel like there is a little pressure for a boy.

We were actually really worried about how dd would react if it were a boy. She was insistent that she wanted a little girl.... luckily she got what she wanted!

P.s. I thought both my girls were boys!

There is totally pressure for a boy with #3 if you have two girls. I get "are you going for a boy?" all the time when I mention that we'd like more children. Of course any child is an almost inconceivable blessing but if I'm completely honest, I would like to parent children of both sexes.

Today in Costco N asked me to buy a dress for her baby sister. "No, we don't know if you have a baby sister yet honey"

                              She wont give it up

Exactly, DH loves his girls, but I know a tiny part of him would love a boy to bond with too!
