Sign me up for the 'worst mom award'.

I had to go the doctor a few weeks ago and was he precribed a new medication for me. I asked if the medication was safe to take while nursing and he said 'yeah, no problem' and gave me some samples. I took all of the samples and went to fill the RX last week. When I got home, I saw a big sticker on the bottle that said 'do not take if you are breastfeeding'. I stopped taking it and called our ped to see if it was ok (couldn't get in touch with the specialist). The ped looked it up and said that they're not sure if the drug is passed through the milk or what it will do to Natalie and it was up to us to weigh the pros and cons and decide.

I'm still waiting to get in touch with the specialist to see if I can take something else. I feel awful for exposing her to this drug and not knowing what it could do to her.

that doesn't qualify you for the "worst mom award", it qualifies the prescriber for the "slap him iin head award". You asked. You were answered incorrectly. I'd be sure to give the prescriber an earful if I were you.

In the meantime, it's proabably okay. The they catagorize the xfrs into breastmilk into 1. we know it's bad, 2. we know it's okay, or 3. we don't know b/c no one has bothered to study. I'd feel worse if it was one known to be bad.

Good luck, and try to release some guilt!

I agree with Jenn about the categories -- can you do a quick internet search on the medication name and see what category comes up?

I had to take a category B medication during pregnancy and while nursing. My ob's office said it was ok to take, my specialist said that based on the research he advised me not to. But I think that is because it was a newer drug and there wasn't much research. I ended up talking to a friend who was in the same specialty and he told me that his opinion was that it would be more beneficial for my babies to bf (with me taking the med) than not. Both of them are just fine!

Don't be too hard on yourself.
